GPS tracking terrible after 16.19 update

I have the Forerunner 255 music and the GPS has failed to track my runs correctly after the latest 16.19 firmware update.

Past several runs on the same route, end locations are different, distances are different and worse is the pacing is off.

I have hard reset the watch 2 and erased all data each time. Issue still persists.

Is there any way to rollback the software to a previous version?

  • Can't see a difference to the previous version. Did you check after the update whether it records the data exactly to the seconds and not "intelligent"?

  • I can't reproduce this problem. 255s here.

  • Hello everyone, same issue here. After the update, the watch has difficulties to find the satellite signals and during the run the it lose the connection several times. Never happen before.

  • My 255M tracks perfectly with 16.19.

  • I have raised a request with Garmin customer services, will keep this post updated when i get a resolution

  • It could be a coincidence and something else is causing the issue, like someone turning on a GPS jammer, or devices unintentionally interfering with GPS in your area. Does your phone get a good GPS lock? Does a running partner's watch get good signal and record a good track?

Are you waiting until the GPS signal indicator is full and green before you start moving?

What GNSS mode are you using for runs? Press the center button after selecting an activity, Run Settings, scroll to GPS. If you're set to "GPS only" - set it to All systems which will include GLONASS and Galileo satellites, or All + Multiband. Multiband provides better tracking in situations with high interference / low signal strength. The watch will use more battery power, but unless you're doing really long runs, it shouldn't be that noticeable.

Make sure your device fully syncs to your phone so that its almanac and ephemeris data is up to date - manually force a sync in the app or on the device, and wait for it to complete. Go outside, remain stationary, select an activity, and wait until the GPS lock indicator is fully green.

You can add a signal strength data field to one of the pages - I believe it's under "other fields." Does it show good signal when you check it regularly on the run?

If you're in an area with poor GPS signal - for example in a city with tall buildings, or running under heavy tree coverage - you may want to wait an extra minute or two after selectign the activity, before moving, to assure the watch achieves a lock on as many satellites as possible and the starting location is accurate. Ditto for if you're doing an activity in a new location that is far from where you last used the watch to record an activity.

  • Same thing over here, my FR 255 used to take less than 10 seconds to find the satellites signal and now it takes more than a minute. This issue started for me on November the 9th and it never happened before. I have done a soft reset twice but the problem persists. My GPS setup is 'All systems' and the track after the activity is correct.

  • After relaying the issue with Garmin Customer Service I had an OTA update relating to my time zone. I have not left the country prior to the GPS issues, so not sure of the technical reason why it has played up. In any case this has now solved my issue. For those having a similar problem you can try updating the time-zone through your watch. Settings > System > Time > Sync with GPS. That may help with acquiring satellite signals.

As mentioned above, I also recommend using "All + Multiband" for your GPS setting for accuracy.

  • I've also had an OTA update recently relating to Time Zones, but I think that it's been after the problem started. Actually my problem started right after I got the Garmin Connect mobile APP up to date, the same day. People from Garmin, could it be related to this Garmin Connect app update? Any idea?
