Is the forerunner able to detect swimming phase with the tablet?

I mean. When I'm on connect.garmin.com and I try to plan a workout it let me choose the equipment (e.g. the kick board) so I expect the watch is able to detect when I use it.

No , you need to use the specific function on the Pool Swimming to record that.

Adding equipment in the app is only there as a personal note. You need to use drill mode for kicking.
