Garmin coach interval training execution score

Hi all, I’m a bit confused how execute the intervals training proposal by garmin coach.

First time I run (slowly) in warmup, jogging… and score execute was 25%

after them, walked in warmup and jogging

execute score 55%

so tried walked in warmup and run slowly in jogging

execute score was the same, 55%

How is the correct way to execute the job (score > 80%)?

    1. Walking or run slowly 

    2. 17x 1’ interval range and 1’ run slowly or walking if needs

  • The execution score is based upon how closely you follow the workout targets (HR, Pace, etc.) over the entirety of the workout (see screenshot below).  I suspect that the warm-up and cool-down portions of your workout are target-less; there isn't a specific pace or HR to follow.  I would assume that the Execution Score calculation is giving you a "0" score contribution for your WU and CD time.  Just by eye-balling your chart, you are tightly following the target pace during the interval phase.  This phase looks to be about half your entire workout time.  So, if the calculation gives you a 0 for the other half of the workout (WU & CD), the best score you'll ever get is about 50%.  That's just my opinion.

  • My workout targets on my FR 255 are based on HR for all types of Garmin suggested workouts including warm up, cooldown, recovery between intervals, Base run, Tempo run and intervals, Threshold run and intervals, VO2 max intervals, except Anaerobic workout which automatically gives only pace targets even if you specify HR.

    That said, my experience with the execution score has been as below:

    1. I get very high (>90) execution scores if I can manage to keep my HR within the target range, which is mostly in Base runs and Long Runs

    2. For Tempo Intervals, Threshold Intervals and VO2 max workouts where the HR targets are high during Intervals ( HRZ 3, 4 or 5) and low during recovery periods (HRZ 1 usually), it takes time for the HR to come down to target values during recovery even by walking and also during Cooldown (HRZ 2) while jogging or walking, and execution scores are much lower. But I don't mind, as long as I know I have achieved my targets during intervals and recovered sufficiently before next interval starts. Similar is the situation for Anaerobic Workouts.

    Rather than target high scores for every workout, I try to improve upon my execution scores when I do similar workout next time.

  • Thanks for that. I had been wondering the same thing. The execution score makes perfect sense for the workouts I create, such as a zone 3 run, but the score for the Garmin Coach workouts is a total fail, which is unfortunate, but not a catastrophe. The web UI is good at showing the targets in the charts, so you can see what you did. It's a shame as this is a small, easy thing to fix.

    I have so far liked the coach workouts, but I find a few niggly issues, such as this, that would make the coach experience much better. Another example is that my sense of my pace is pretty awful, and for the speed repeats, they ask for a specific pace range. That's fine, but the update rate and interval for calculating pace can make finding a good steady pace difficult, and I sometimes find myself speeding up or slowing down quite a bit. Overall, though, it's been good for me, I think.

  • To add to what @dan.boilermaker said, it looks like there are only targets on the 1' intervals, so 17min of your 64min run. If you were 100% hitting that you would get 17/64=26.5%

    16min of hitting your target is exactly 25%

    So, to conclude, you did great. 

  • Good grief! If the scoring is that stupid, it is worse than useless. How hard would it be to calculate, say for a pace or cadence target, the percentage difference from the target range, and multiply that by the percentage of time you did that specific activity, but only count the time for activities that have measurable goals???

    In this example, we have 17 distinct goal directed activities. If PDn is the percentage difference, from ideal, for activity "n", your score would be the sum(1 to n): PDn/17
