Can the Forerunner 255 automatically detect when I am swimming?

My Fitbit can do this, but it seems the only way I can log it is to manually turn on and off a swim session, which is a bit of a hassle.

The sensors surely can detect immersion and with other sensors, why doesn't it do this?

I think Fitbit and Garmin have quite different customers. Fitbit customers prefer everything automatic and easy, while the typical Garmin customer sets up their own screens, configures everything to their liking, and manually starts and stops the logging. I am sure Garmin could make it automatic, but very few of their customers would use it like that.
