Failure to restart following software Update 16.17 (F255 Music)

My brand new (2 days old) 255 Music failed to restart following the installation of the 16.17 software update.
The display showed a blinking blue triangle after the update was installed.
Even a hard reset (hold light button for 15 sec) would not solve the problem.
The advice from Garmin support was to return the watch for replacement as there was actually nothing I could do to fix the problem myself.

So, if you have a F255 Music, don't install the latest (16.17) update !

  • I only have my brand new 255music for a day now, after the first software update I was also stuck with that blue triangle!

A master reset for frozen screen helped for me:

In case your Garmin Forerunner 255 or 255s is frozen and you’re unable to go to Settings for Reset, then there’s a workaround that you can perform to master reset your Forerunner 255.

    1. Press and hold the Light button, Start Stop button, and Back button at the same time until you listen to the first beep.
    2. After first beep, leave the Start Stop button, but keep holding the Light button and Back button.
    3. Once you hear the second beep, leave the Back button.
    4. Now you will see the master reset process taking place on the Watch’s screen.
    5. That’s it.

Once done, you’ve to set up the watch from the scratch

I can see that software version is now on 16.17 [DFU-768d81]

  • All : thank you for your input in this forum. I had exactly the same problem with my Forerunner 255 Music  bought a few days ago (received 12 Sept). Incredible ! I lost hours by following the procedure indicated in Garmin's website (with Garmin Express). It did not work. I read afterwards this forum. Pressing all buttons concurrently magically restarted my watch. I have the impression that Garmin knows that issue, has no fixes, but keep selling that watch (it was proposed at a discount on Garmin's website). This is NOK ! This is too much money to accept such situation. What a frustrating experience.

  • Oh my goodness, first Garmin and most likely my last. Thank you so much for the fix - it works.

  • Just bought this for my son’s birthday. Updated and bricked itself with the blue flashing triangle. Tried both 4 button techniques and nothing. Held so long my finger have permanent button impression. Garmin, this is not right!!

  • Update, it worked when I did 9280321’s fix. Hopefully doesn’t keep happening. Thanks 9280321!!

  • Same thing happened to me, this is a big problem for Garmin and not a great look. Like most people here, this was my first experience using a Garmin product. Not off to a great start. 9280321's suggestion worked, but then I had to go back through the whole process of setting up the watch.

  • I had the exact same problem - this worked for me:

Try to do a hard reset with the button of your watch
    It is something like:
    - Power off your watch (Hold "light" button between 15-20 sec)
    - While holding "start" & "back" button, hold few sec "light" (to power on the device)
    - Release "start" button after the first beep and the back button with the next beep

(for me it was not working with the "up" & "down" arrow button, but ok with the "start-stop" button)

  • All,

We are currently tracking this disruption and have escalated the investigation. If you are experiencing this, please reach out to your local Garmin Product Support agent so we can add you to the report. It does appear that the reset   described fixes the issue in most cases.

Please note that those steps will reset the device to factory settings. However, your current data in Garmin Connect will not be affected.
