Failure to restart following software Update 16.17 (F255 Music)

My brand new (2 days old) 255 Music failed to restart following the installation of the 16.17 software update.
The display showed a blinking blue triangle after the update was installed.
Even a hard reset (hold light button for 15 sec) would not solve the problem.
The advice from Garmin support was to return the watch for replacement as there was actually nothing I could do to fix the problem myself.

So, if you have a F255 Music, don't install the latest (16.17) update !

  • I think most of us have installed 16.17 automatically on our F255 Music with no issues.

  • I've just installed the same update to my F225 Music, and I have exactly the same problem. I only received mine yesterday. I was advised to sync with garmin express whilst the watch was off, and whilst holding the start/stop button. Failed to Sync. Then I was told to send a report from my watch but that requires a code which was not provided. My first Garmin item, and so far it's an appalling experience.

  • I too have the triangle issue on a new watch. Ugh!! Forerunner 255 without the music option.

  • I have the same problem: after update, blue triangle, and no way to gat it working anymore. F255, just a week old.

I thought Garmin was a good brand.

  • Same issue--exactly as described by the original poster and other commenter. Is there anything more frustrating than your brand new (relatively expensive) Garmin not working? I don't think the take-home point is necessarily "Don't install the update," as I imagine it works fine in most cases. But, if you do install, and get this issue: you're not alone!

  • Could it be some addon software (watch face, widget, data field) that is not compatible with the new version, preventing it from starting up?

  • I had same with 255s I bought today for my wife  1st day and it required software update, and got the blinking blue triangle.

Powered it down holding too left button. Then held top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right until it bleeped, continued to hold all 4 until 2nd bleep, then got the settings cog on the screen, which lit up. Watch seems OK now, had to set up as new device from choosing language onwards. Fingers crossed, seems to be working OK, and the System is new OS same as my 955 solar.

    • Unbelievable but Yes, the 4 button thing solved it. Not exactly in the way you described, but powering down with upper left button, but keep holding it, and then pressing the other 3 also, and after some time, the watch settings came up. It seems OK now
  • I pleased it might have helped

  • Amazing thank you,

Second watch in a week after poor delivery from Amazon as it would have been two watches in two days.

My first watch asked to update after 12 hours so I did and then the flashing triangle. Garmin said to contact Amazon. Amazon made me feel I was privileged to have a refund.

Second watch asked for an update and I thought surely it won’t break as garmin are quality. It did break.

Luckily this forum exists. I tried Gareth’s technique and nothing, but followed 577’s technique and it worked.

    Thanks guys!

Cant believe that Garmin didn’t suggest this when i contacted them.
