Forcing into Mass-Storage Mode while booting does not work properly

according to [1], on a turned-off device, when holding start/stop upon plugin, the device will start in mass-storage-mode.

This actually does not work in my device. however as long as i keep pressing, garmin express is detecting the device and is able to sync, but there is not Mass Storage device showing up.

This is very unfortunate because i will need to hard-reset my device because if the failed 16.17 firmware upgrade...
