Infinite crashing after installing v16.17

I installed the version 16.17 firmware on my Forerunner 255. Now it keeps restarting and when it is started, it shows a message that Spotify is installed as music app and then crashes. After this, the loop restarts.

After a while, it shows the 'Spotify is added to your music apps' screen and gets stuck.

I tried turning it off after this and I tried connecting it to my PC with Garmin Express, but nothing happens.

How can I fix this?

  • Thank you for posting, I'm sorry to hear about this. Are you turning it off by accessing the controls menu and selecting Power Off? Or are you forcing the watch off by holding down the LIGHT button? If you have not forced it off by holding that button, please do so and then power it back on. If it still gets stuck in a loop, is temporarily uninstalling Spotify an option?

  • With help of the Garmin support , I was able to do a factory reset. Not ideal, but the watch is working again.

  • I got immediate crashing loop after the update. Only a triangle shown on screen. Soft reset (holding the light button 30s) didn't help. Full firmware reset helped finally. But all data and my screen settings were lost. DEV IDEA: WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE SETTINGS BACKUP IN GARMIN CONNECT. It took almost an hour to adjust everything as I want...

  • 1. Ensure the watch is powered off. 2. You may need to hold LIGHT for up to 30 seconds to turn the watch off. 3. Press and hold DOWN, START/STOP, and BACK/LAP. 4. Press LIGHT to power the watch on while holding these three buttons. 5. After the first beep release START/STOP. 6. After the second beep release the remaining buttons.

...this solved my crash loop problem :) but deletes everything :(

  • just got the update - facing same issue...

  • FWIW I'm facing a similar issue with my Forerunner 965. Installed the latest firmware maybe a week ago and it's been constantly crashing, blue triangle appears on screen for up to an hour sometimes...and as of this morning it has switched itself off and I can't get it to turn back on. So frustrating!

  • Hi, this step worked for me. but the watch won't pair with my phone

  • For the pairing issue: I had to remove/delete the watch from garmin connect app first. Then adding hard-reseted watch as new works. Pairing information is lost also with the hard reset so thats the reason why it is not recognized without removal.

Additionally reboot of phone might be needed if phone messes BT pairing info - have faced that with non-garmin devices few times...

  • I bought the ForeRunner 255 yesterday - woke up this morning to find it had crashed. Not good. Soft reset didn't work. But the answer in this thread helped to do a factory reset. I must say, I'm not impressed so far - so I'm switching off automatic updates for now.
