Respiration rate

Does the displayed respiration rate on my Forerunner 255 show the rate for the last minute? Last 15 minutes? Last hour? If it's supposed to be the last minute rate, then then this feature should be disabled and removed since it's completely inaccurate.

  • I think it's your current respiration rate.
I just counted my breaths manually for a minute, and my count was equal to what the watch showed. I don't believe it is a 100% accurate a 100% of the time, but it is probably enough to see how your raspiratory rate changes over time.

  • When I've done breathing exercises (5-6 breaths a minute) the watch/app is not showing the change. As an experiment I just did a 5 minute 4 inhale 8 exhale = 5 breaths per minute = 25 breaths in 5 minutes. The app showed 13-15 breaths per minute. And  wasn't moving. If the rate = a long measuring period (like an hour) then I could test that out, watch may be accurate. If the watch is short term measure like last 1 to 15 minutes, than no, it fails that test.

  • I agree, that's disappointing.

Have you tried the breathing activity? I just looked at one of mine, and the graph shows values in the 3-6 brpm range

  • I guess the respiration rate is based on heart rate variability, and will be significantly more accurate if you are wearing a heart rate strap.

  • Garmin's respiration rate is a random number, which has little to do with the reality. It only correlates with your heart rate (lower HR=lower RR), but the number shown is a result of an algorythm, not the actual situation. Garmin has no way of knowing you real respiration rate.

For me it always shows 13-15 while resting, regardless if the reality is 5 or 25.
