Pod metrics without wearing the pod

Hello, I recently bought a Forerunner 255. It didn't measure ground contact time and vertical oscillation. I bought the Garmin Pod (put on the waist of the shorts) and when I wear it it does give me these metrics. However, when I choose to go on a run and don't wear the RD Pod, the watch suddenly gives me ground contact time and vertical oscillation! The only thing I don't get not wearing the pod is the difference between my left and right foot.

How is this possible? Is the watch suddenly smarter because I bought and wore the RD Pod?
