Forerunner 255 Music - Bluetooth Connection dropping for headphones

Hi all,

I've seen other threads about this same problem. The headphone bluetooth connection drops out frequently during runs.

I wanted to post my solution/workaround on the other threads but Garmin keeps locking them for some reason....

Anyway,

I noticed that every time the earbud connection would drop my watch was trying to connect to my phone ( the connection sync icon was spinning on the watch ). I always leave my phone in the car when I run so every 5 minutes or so the watch tries to connect to it and kicks the earbuds at the same time.

I think it can't handle the audio connection and the attempted phone connection at the same time.

What I do now is to turn my phone connection off before a run and I've gone from 10 - 20 drop outs in an hour run to zero. Hasn't dropped out once since I started doing this.

Connectivity > Phone > switch status to off.

Obviously this still needs a fix from Garmin but I hope this works for you if you have the same problem.

  • good point. You should send this as a suggestion and a report to Garmin. thx

  • I have been having the same bluetooth issues with Garmin 245 Music. It drives me insane. I initially blamed the earbuds (Jaybird Vista 2) and I was sent an new pair....same issue. Tried Aftershokz...same issue, tried other brand buds same problem with disconnecting. All of these buds work fine on other bluetooth devices, just not the Garmin. There are HUNDREDS of complaints on this forum about this issue with ZERO response from Garmin. Today, I finally spoke to a Garmin Rep, He told me to click a link and they would replace my watch. I click the link and they want $130 to do the exchange. Not only that, I have to mail them my old watch and only then will they send the new one. So essentially, ill be without a watch for most likely weeks. I say all of that to push home that Garmin KNOWS they have a huge problem with this watch and REFUSE to acknowledge it. I find it highly unfair that I have to pay for a watch to replace a KNOWN defective product. Garmin, you can do better. If I have similar issues with this replacement, I am completely DONE with Garmin.

  • Notice the change log for the current beta version:

    • Improved headset compatibility. (Music versions only)
  • Funny to note that I only got my first dropouts after this beta update. :) Have huawei freebuds pro and have zero problems with it.

  • Garmin found out and they will be breaking for you too. Slight smile

  • After experimenting, I found turning the phone connection off helpful, but I still got some dropouts. Turning Wi-Fi off on the watch helped further I think. Still more dropouts than I think is reasonable however.

  • The procedure is this one with Beats Fit Pro2:
1- turn off bluetooth of the Phone associated with the watch
2- turn off the bluetooth pairing mode on the watch by holding light button and selecting the icon
3- turn off wi-fi sensor on the watch
4- remove previous pairing of the hearphones
5- from "Music"-->"HearPhones" and find them. I have the Beats Fit Pro2 and this had to be done leaving the hearphones in the charging case, opening it and keep pressing the pairing button.

    It worked for me

  • Got a new 255 10 days ago and same issue. Had a replacement watch delivered yesterday and same issue (probably worse) so still not been fixed

  • I received mine yesterday.  1st part of my walk was fine.  No phone with me. I leave it at the house.  About 1 mile into the walk it started cutting out.  Not bad but on the last 1/2 mile of my walk I had to hold my watch at my neck so it would not cut out.  Terrible.

  • Did you try to switch the phone connection off?
