[BUG] Garmin fr255 version 15.19 crashing loading course navigation.

Every time I load a running course and select navigation, the device crashes and reboots. This problem persists with multiple courses. However, courses still work without problem on cycling activities.

  • Maybe it is related to the course? Is it public, so others can try to load it?
Or maybe you can try loading one of mine?
My courses are working fine with 19.18 on my watch.

  • I did a full reset of my watch and it is working once again. It seems soemthing was wonky with the settings from the multiple upgrades. I did notice that when I start a ride, it is a little slower initially than usual (compared to when not doing it with navigation). Perhaps something was hanging it just long enough to trigger the watchdog timer?

Reset was well overdue though. Seems lots of gremlins are gone and battery usage has gone down. Was worth the setup effort this time.

  • I had my fr255 Music freeze for several years now, when trying to load courses (it froze before even seeing the course list).

    Recreated by doing this:
Start button > Run > up button menu > Navigation >Courses ->> FREEZE.

I think I might have solved the issue:

Connected the Fr255 music to computer.
Entered the watch via Explorer in Windows 10. Moved all the files inside the folder "Courses", to a backup folder on my computer. (internal storage > GARMIN > Courses).

Now the watch didnt freeze anymore. So it seems one of the courses (.fit-files) loaded on the watch was the source of the problem.

Now, there was 1 of 14 files that had much bigger file size than the others. It was 60 kB big, while the other files was between 1-10kB. I tried loading one file at a time, and when this 60kB file was loaded inside the watch folder, the watch deleted it automatically. So it seems the watch did a clean up on that file. The other 13 .fit-files are now inside the watch again, and I can FINALLY run using Courses!

  • The 60kB file mentioned above didnt include the text "course-service-24.9.0.8" in the end of the .fit-file (when opening the file in a text editor). I opened 3 other .fit files that all ended with that text on the last line. So it could be that the file itself was corrupted. And maybe not related to the actual file size at all. I dont know.
