Garmin 255 - timer continues after target reached/workout completed. Why doesn't it stop automatically?

I've recently purchased a Garmin 255, which appears to be a great watch with a significant design flaw - unless I'm doing something wrong.

If I set a distance target such as 5K, the watch will correctly inform me I've reached my target. However, it appears that the timer continues to run until I explicitly stop the activity.

This means that I have to press the stop button as soon as my watch notifies me that I've reached my target - which adds seconds and distance onto the recorded time.

Surely this can't be be design. Why not stop the timer as soon as the target has been reached - as I'm sure 99% of users would want.

Is there a workaround other than remembering to press stop?

  • That’s fine if you want to configure such a workout. However, I want to be able to configure a simple 5K run and have the timer stop automatically at 5K. That way the recorded time is exactly that for the 5K run, and the average pace is not affected by the warm up or cool down.

Athletes don’t have to stop the timer themselves when they cross the finish line in a race - Garmin should provide the option to support this principle with their watches.

That's nice. The one way, You can do this - you make a new activity for a 5k run and use it on your watch. And you get an average pace (and all other stats) for your 5k run without warmups/cooldown too. Another way to get stats and much more from your track - use Segments.

That is the way how it works. Or you can use another brand that suits you better.

I just want to show how Garmin works and not insult anyone. Relaxed

  • Unfortunately that's not how it works. If I create a 5K workout (with no warm up or cool down) the timer doesn't stop when the 5K distance is reached. It continues until the stop button is pressed. The result is a run whose total length is about 5.01KM - with extra seconds tagged on the end.

I would simply like the option to 'Stop timer when workout ends'.

  • The other problem is that you will never see an orderly progression of workouts in your list on Garmin connect.  As it stands you can easily sort them for a quick-glance view of the stats you want.  This is because they all appear as EXACTLY 10K, not 10.0001 or 10.1 or 10.3.  The name of the workout will also be the same.  This is an incredibly stupid omission by Garmin and is not at all defensible.  Picking up a 745 today and will test this immediately- if it's the same flaw, then that's it- I'm done with Garmin and that includes their SATNAVs which are also junk!

  • The only problem of your wishes is - your 5k and garmins 5k are not the same. It can be a 200m longer or 100m shorter.  And if your watch stops 200m for the finish line and says to you - "well done, go home" :)  I would like to see you in this situation.

  • it's as accurate as you can get for a home system.  Imagine the olympics and the runners finishing then having to wait for their times as some guy messes about with an MSDOS style program before you can get your time!!! hahahahahah.  Ridiculous.

  • This isn’t the Olympics!

Have you ever run in a local road race, 5K, 10K, half-marathon, marathon? How soon after finishing do you find out your official time? Do you go to a race volunteer and berate them that you need to know your official time immediately?

  • When running a course near my house - through fileds etc - then my 5K and Garmin's are exactly the same. I'm happy with the level of accuracy that the GPS affords.

You're referring to a race with set start/finish lines. Under such circustmances I obviously wouldn't enable the 'Stop timer when workout complete' option that I'm proposing.

  • That's a strawman argument. We're talking about Garmin adding a feature which would allow users to optionally stop the timer automatically at the end of a workout. I repeat 'option' - not default behaviour. Enabling this option would not be analogous to berating officials at the end of a race.

  • I'm off now- apparently I'm being abusive lol - what a world we live in now.  Just to let you know I've just tried the 745 and it is the same.  You have to 'trim' the activity to get the measured distances on the activities sub menu.  You might as well resort to writing things down on paper!  This will be going back in the box too.  In summary, the 735XT looks like the last one to use the common sense method.  I'd recommend an mp3 clip to play your music.  Some really simple ones do exactly what Garmin can't manage to do for $500- work!  Take care Ishigaki.
