Is FR255 good for pool swimming? (losing my patience with Garmin Swim 2 imperfection...)

Hello,

As many other users I am losing my patience with Garmin Swim 2 watch. No. of distances are distorted regullary.

So, I wonder to buy ForeRunner 255, maybe they corrected the swim algorithm there? Maybe the hardware used there is better to take it? Please, if somebody uses FR255 on swimming pool - tell if it is good form pool swimming.

Thanks in advance, greetings to all!

  • I can only tell you this: I've been swimming with the 255 for a year now, and so far it hasn't miscounted a single lap. My previous Fenix 3 was less reliable.

  • yeah, is perfect! I am using it with a downloaded app / fields from IQ connect. Provides more data.

  • My 255 is basically useless for swimming. Today I swam 2300 meters and the watch recorded 3250.

It adds a lap whenever it feels like it.

  • Name of the app?

  • F3b dozen swim - it is a data field I like

  • And here you have put my faith in doubt. I am always loosing the count and just trust it blindly to get those 25m laps counted for me.. so it might be that it is not 100% accurate

  • I think it is very reliable for some swimmers, but not others. It depends on both your swimming style and the pool. I think the watch uses the compass to determine that you change direction, and it also tries to sense the push off from the wall. I guess metal structures in the pool can disturb the compass. Make sure you make a strong push off and glide a bit before starting to swim every lap.

  • Thanks, folks for all your answers. Proceeding of swimming activity in the pools did seem to me not too complicated. And it was not complicated when I was using Garmin Swim (1) for a few years - maybe one-two incorrect count a month. All this time I swim in the same pool, 50m, with the same styles (well... hope with better technique every year ;-) no, just for recreation really). Last day my Garmin Swim 2 displayed a "new record" after swimming, making my speed on the Michael Phelps level :-) Of course by adding me laps (and the time was as it was). So, not only the swimming technique could be a problem, having all my history the watch should calculate, that swimming suddenly so fast is just impossible (2x faster with 2x fewer strokes...)

As one of my interlocutors noticed, probably all the new generation of Garmin watches (FR255, FR 265, Instinct2,...) are using the same software modules. Something like Samsung has one Android, adapted to different hardware on different phone models. It makes development easy. So whatever I buy - will be very similar. It is not optimistic for now, maybe software updates will change something? Risk in money spending is not fine :-)

Maybe I will look for something other (Suunto?) but it is theme for another forum :-)

    Greetings!
