RMR

For some reason my RMR is very low in contrast with other smartwatches I had previous.I am 42,years old 55 kilos and 1.71 height. and my daily RMR is almost 500 cal according to the forerunner 255s.How I can calibrate the RMR?

  • Hi, I am 48 years old, 55kg and 1.68 height so quite similar to you.

    Garmin says my resting calories are 1,659 daily. See below screenshot. A note though that looking at what Garmin says, what they displays isn't RMR but what they call Resting Calories, which they define as: "RMR is based on your age, height, weight and gender. To determine your resting calories, we slightly increase your RMR estimate to account for sedentary to light movement throughout the day. Based on this adjustment, you have burned an estimated 1,659 resting calories on this day".

    But still, the difference with you is too large to be explained by this adjustment. Only thing I can think of is that one of your parameters was input erroneously but I presume you've checked that already.

  • Thank you for reply. At the end of the day my resting were  changed to 1533 which makes sense according to my kilos and height. However my active calories were only 245 which seems  low to me because i am doing in daily basis crossfit(6 days per week) and I am in general very active(more than 10.000 steps in daily basis).According to my old smartwatches my daily total calories was around 2.500 per day and for example yesterday was only 1778 check the picture (https://ibb.co/FsX3jXT) and similar the past days. I am wondering if there is any reason for that. Any help from you I would appreciate .

  • I can't comment on crossfit activities because I don't do those (you do log them with the watch yes ?!), but looking at my records, Garmin doesn't seem to give a huge calory burn for walking.

    Let me give you an example: I am checking my records and on 31/3 I did a 10km hike or in my case, around 13,000 steps. Garmin gave me only 285 active calories burn. And I was hiking at 5km/h, which is faster than the average walking speed in daily life.

    Another example: on Sunday I didn't exercise. I still walked 5,500 steps. For that day, Garmin recorded only 107 active calories for me.

  • Yes i see. I am wondering if this is the real burn calories or smartwatch underestimates the  active calories in some way?

  • Good question, I'd like to know too. Do you have access to a gym with a treadmill for example ? These display a calorie burn per hour and it would be interesting to compare with what Garmin gives, to know if at least it's in the same ballpark.

    You got me curious now, I'll go on the treadmill tomorrow and try on a 1h brisk walk for example. Let's see what happens.

    I would think that the calorie burn as calculated by Garmin has the potential to be more accurate than a treadmill because it uses more parameters overall (sex, age, height etc).

  • Many treadmills overestimate the burnt calories quite a lot, so I wouldn't use those as a reference.

  • Okay, these are all algorithm based anyway so by definition not precise, do you have by any chance a better alternative for us to consider ?

  • You could log a workout with Strava, and compare. But I think Garmin is quite accurate when all the settings are okay.
    It is difficult to get accurate measurements of calorie burn. The Norwegian thriathlete team are collecting their *** to measure how much energy there is left in it...
