Speculation on which F7 Pro features will make it to the 255?

According to DCR, here’s where things stand for the Forerunner 955/965, with these features also slated for the 2023 Q3 quarterly update unless otherwise stated. That timeframe for that production release is roughly concurrent with Epix/Fenix for “later this summer”.

New Endurance Score metric: Yes, part of Q3 2023 firmware update.
New Hill Score metric: Yes, part of Q3 2023 firmware update
– New weather overlays on maps (precip, temp, wind, clouds): Yes, part of Q3 2023 firmware update **
– New shaded relief on all maps: Yes, part of Q3 2023 firmware update **
– New split screen data pages (map + data fields split vertically): Potentially Q3 2023, but still finalizing.
– New ‘perimeter’ data pages (data around edge of map): Not likely till Q4 at earliest.
– New ‘Recents’ feature to quickly access widgets anytime: TBD
– Added 30+ new activity/sport profiles (listed down below): The majority will be added, they haven’t finalized the exact list yet, but are saying that “most everything” that isn’t a high-speed watersport will come to the Forerunner 955/965 series.

** Shading and weather overlays for maps can be ruled out.

  • My guess is that none of these will make it to the FR255.

  • Why not, since the 955 and the 255 run pretty similar firmwares, having their updates pretty much aligned?

  • Bacause 955 is supposed to be a more expensive and better watch. That is why Garmin removes some features from the 255 compared to the 955. My guess is that all of the above would fall into that category. Maybe some of them will appear on the 265, but not on 255.

I hope I am wrong. New metric is always nice to have.

  • I think / hope the endurance will make it down to the 255.  Garmin are flaunting this as begin the mark of the endurance "Vo2 max", so you would think they want this on most devices.

I'm still annoyed that 265 has more stuff than 255, an update less than a year left a bad taste with me.

I would also like to see the jet lag that was preciously given to the others, but it isn't a big deal if we don't get that.

  • Some of these features come to f7 3-6 month delayed, fr255 get nothing of f7 goodies. You get what you pay for :)

  • Getting some new sport profiles would be sweet Heart eyes

  • Can't say I care that much about these new metrics when the current ones are barely working.

The FR255 won't get any of these anyway; it's the new "slightly lower end mid range watch", just like its predecessor the FR245, which almost didn't get any new features at all.

What annoys me though is Garmin paywalling the activity modes. Like you have Rowing on the FR255, but you can't have Kayaking. It's silly, just stop it.

  • But aren't pretty much all activity modes covered in IQ apps?

  • Honestly I wouldn't know, I'm not a big IQStore user. I guess those would be third party apps? I'm talking about the native Garmin ones.

  • This. Even $50 Fitbits have activity modes that the FR255 doesn't. I understand paywalling advanced activity modes that measure sport specific metrics like diving, etc. but for other activities where they basically only measure HR and calories, it makes no sense. I'll never upgrade to the FR955, FR965 for an extra activity mode that's essentially cardio with a new icon, period.
