Latest software update broke the heart rate monitor and caused battery drainage on 255

I have a new 255 music, only used one week. First week went great, then I charged it for the first time. This coinceded with the software updating to version 14.20 one day prior I think (can't remember if it was the same day or the day prior).

First night after charging the battery lost 50%! Also, after this the heart rate monitor is broken. Now it is a long delay in picking up sudden increases. Before this it was very effective in this regard, now it takes up to a minute for it to register such bumps. I compared to another monitor both prior and after the update/battery drainage, so I know it was accurate before.
This is not during any activity on the watch, I don't use them.

I always have flight mode on, and sync once a day. After the first charging, for the first time it also struggled to sync, where I had to push the sync button in the app 4-5 times.

Any ideas what to do?
I've never had a garmin before, but I've tried to turn off the watch and also do a hard shut down (light button until it turns off).

  • If you've only used it a week, maybe it is worth trying a full factory reset?  As I understand it, the main thing you would lose is that it would start over trying to get baseline numbers for the HRV sleep metric.

But, I also wonder if you've gotten Pulse Ox enabled at the same time you got the update. That function is very power hungry.

I don't have the music variant, so am not familiar with the other functions related to WiFi etc. My non-music 255 gets about 2 weeks of battery life on the 14.20 firmware, including roughly 1 hour per day of outdoor activity with location tracking.

  • I have the same issue, the captor is no longer working. And the battery was empty within 2 days ... I had on the phone the SAV, they told me to send it back through the buyer of the watch !

  • Thanks! I did a full factory reset, but HR monitor still broken. It works the majority of time, but when I've had resting HR for a while it doesn't pick up sudden increases. I clocked it now, didn't register increase from 65 to 120 within the first 3 minutes.

With regards to battery, problem seems to persist. 16% lost now in the last 5 hours since charging to 100%. Not based on music or Pulse Ox. I have to claim some sort of warranty. Can't believe they haven't sorted out these kind of things, seems to be quite common

  • I think I'm getting the same experience with the HR. For 3 days in a row since Friday 18 Aug 2023 I've done a couple of hard sessions (i. e. 3hs ride) ad according to garmin my avg heart rate was 93bpms
