Unreliable GPS with 8 month old 255

Hello all,

Just a quick one, I've been with Garmin for about 3 or 4 years now, second watch is a Forerunner 255 which was purchased last August. All firmware is currently up to date.

Recently I've been noticing more and more drop outs in GPS signal mid-run for no obvious reason. As per the below, running the same route 3 times over 3 weeks it is throwing it out at random points in different places. Whilst training for a half marathon this isn't ideal.

I know the limitations of GPS in built up urban areas/ near body of water, with interference etc. The watch is set to all bands for highest accuracy.

Effectively, I ran this route a few times and for a few weeks had no issues (but have on other run routes) and then twice in the space of the last week its thrown me off massively in random places. First up is a run where it recorded accurately through including the right start and end point.

Then last week it threw me off in the middle of a running track and has my end point over half a mile from home. Today, despite  having full lock before hitting start, the first two and a half miles of the run are in random locations when I ran the same route as the first image.

Again, this is with a watch on highest accuracy settings, full 15 second reset last week after that bad run, with full lock before starting. There are no tall buildings and the start of the tun is in a normal suburban residential area with no tall building or tree coverage to effect the signal. The middle of the run is in a country park and hence I can't understand it throwing me off into the woods from the running track.

Has anyone got any suggestions or should I be submitting a warranty claim for a bad watch? The watch has suffered so significant falls or damage that should have affected it.

Any ideas anyone?

  • That's what I was thinking, need to do more tests

  • I have a portable GPS navigation unit for car use, and I found that it is very unresponsive in Fords. The reason is the heated front windshield, which is a thin metal layer. It blocks the GPS signals. A thin metal layer in a jacket would have the same effect.

  • This is awesome information, thankyou. I am really disappointed that Garmin have nothing on this topic. Now the weather has improved and I'm not wearing my Goretex jacket and have "All + Multipoint" tGPS mode turned on I am starting to get awesome accurate GPS results, better than my trusty Google Pixel which is really impressive. Meanwhile Garmin technical support have arranged a replacement device for me after offering no advice or diagnosis whatsoever.

Next test will be to put the Goretex jacket on and make sure it is scrunched up just above the watch on my wrist (its normal location). I suspect it will immediately start losing GPS.

I checked out firmware update dates and version 14.20 was out 2 months ago and was only language fixes so that is not a relevant factor.

  • It rained today. I wore my Goretex jacket. It doesn't cover my watch but is obviously in close proximity at the wrist. My 255 failed to record 2km of the run and had random stray GPS points in the data to the extent that the Strava 'Correct Distance' function calculated the run to be 2km further than it actually was.

Yesterday the 255 GPS recorded perfectly, I wasn't wearing the jacket.

FFS, thousands of Garmin support posts and experts, millions of users and nobody has spotted that a simple Goretex lining in a rain jacket can break the GPS? I'm happy that this is just a GPS antenna attenuation issue but I am really annoyed at Garmin for incompetence - nowhere have rain jackets and car windscreens been mentioned as issues to GPS reception!

  • It is pretty old, 2012, but it is a Gore Running Wear Mythos GT AS like this one: Gore Mythos Running Wear Men's Jacket Gore-Tex - Blue, M : Amazon.co.uk: Fashion

Looking at the specs it has a Gore-Tex Paclite Shell - my guess is that is the problem.

  • Brilliant, thanks - I didn't know the science.

    Cannot really confirm that.

Today I wore my Arcteryx jacket made from Gore Paclite Shell with my FR955 (which is GPS wise identical to the FR255). Of course the sleeve fully covered the watch.

On the first part of the walk, it was still dry, then started raining and the jacket was getting wet.
Did not matter, the recorded track is near to perfect the whole time.
I can see, where I crossed the street and on which side I was walking…

FW 14.20, SatIQ automatic selection and intelligent recording.

  • Thanks for the info. I wonder what it is about my jacket then as I have proved it is the culprit many times now. Velcro? reflective strips? Or is it because its a really snug fit and I don't wear it over the watch so it rucks up next to the buttons? i.e. more fabric near the watch
