Training plans for rowing machine ?

Hey chaps,

I see that Garmin Connects has a section Training Plans for Running and Cycling activities. This looks cool, with a schedule, a virtual trainer, goals etc, and I'm looking for something like that but for the rowing machine we have at the gym downstairs.

Can this be downloaded from somewhere, or, is this available from somewhere else in the app which I might have missed ?

Thank you

- Jean.

  • no such thing as Garmin plans or coach for rowing. you have to design your own workouts via the connect app.

  • I also know nothing like that from Garmin.

You could start with Concept2 Training Guide

I don’t know which rowing machine you own (I own a Concept2 Model D with PM5), nice thing is, that FR 255 can be connected via ANT+ to some machines, acknowledge those as input and receive data like Watt and distance.

  • Ok thanks for confirming guys.

Thanks - once again - for the useful suggestion.

The model we have at the gym is indeed a Concept2 but with an PM4 (which I presume is an older version of the PM5).

I did have a look at its menu and can see a button to the effect of connecting the PM4 to a Garmin chest strap via ANT+ but unfortunately it doesn't detect my HRM-Dual. I have made sure my HR is broadcasting on the watch. But no worries I will find a manual of the PM4 and see if I can get it work. Unless it's broken.

Thanks again for the link to the Concept2, I see they have a lot of training suggestions here, exactly what I needed ! Thanks a lot.

  • Get ErgData from Concept for your phone. Pair your watch and phone with the rower. The Concept site /app have training plans and WoDs. Record as indoor rowing on your  watch for imprting to Garmin Connect. The rower's PM5 will do all the interval and pace notifications. IIRC you can also get more detail on the paired phone/tablet but I never made use of this much. Few years since I have used this but I got it to work really well for a couple of training blocks

Edit: I noticed you have PM4 on the machine. Make sure to get the older version of ED linked here. https://www.concept2.com/service/software/ergdata-pm3-pm4

Also: If you do structured workouts with rest you want to be sure the batteries are good enough to keep the PM powered up during rests (the flywheel is also a generator while you row. Having done this all over, hotel and small gym batteries are often dead. Just get a couple of D Cells if this is the case.

  •  Ok yes I should have mentioned that I have also already installed ErgData on my phone too. But my PM4 (again, it's a PM4 we have, not the PM5) wasn't recognising my HRM-Dual when I tried this afternoon. I had a look at the PM4 manuals here, but it doesn't say which models of Garmin the PM4 is compaptible with, it just says that "Your PM4 has been shipped with a Garmin heart rate chest belt". I'm not using the belt shipped, I am using my new HRM-Dual. Not sure if this means only the shipped belt will be working, or should my HRM-Dual work too ? There's also no troubleshooting in case the PM4 doesn't recognise my chest belt.

I will see if I can spend more time tomorrow, I must be missing something.

  • A while since I have done this but I am sure that from PM3 through to PM5 from the home screen press up or down until it says "Pair with ANT HR monitor" (or somesuch) and follow the prompts. If using just your watch or passing through the band from the watch broadcast HR from the watch. 255 Maual page 50 current version for instructions. A band will simply get picked up IME

Yes I have done both. Strange why it didn't work. I will try again tomorrow. I just hope the PM4 we have isn't broken.
