Watch face customization unavailable?

Hi everyone. New Forerunner user here. I have been trying to find a customizable watch face that fits my needs over on the Connect IQ store. I have found a few good options.

However, even though the watch faces include customizable data fields, my watch does not give me the option to “customize” when selecting a watch face in the menu. I only get the option to “Apply” the watch face.

Running latest watch firmware. Have also tried reinstalling watch faces a few times with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Hi, you must go to "settings" WatchFace in ConnectIQ

Connect IQ -> My Watch Faces -> Installed

Tap to your Watch Face and here is two buttons "Settings" and "Uninstall"

  • Thanks for the tip. For some reason I only get the “uninstall” option on Connect IQ? It’s the same for at least 4 other watch faces. Also after reinstalling a couple of times.

  • I believe you need to install the Connect IQ app on your phone. You can customize the watch faces from within that app.

  • Something seems to have broken in Software version 14.20.

From watch select Goto Settings->Appearance->Watch Face. The watch seems to crash or some odd behavior like that. Once selected you can only do two things ... 1. Apply (no idea what is apply) 2. Press back to exit.

We can update the watch face from ConnectIQ App alternatively.

  • When you go into that menu, you can use the UP/DOWN buttons to look at the different available watch faces.  Using edit/apply button will actually select it as the new watchface.  If it had on-watch customizations, they would also be offered there as other choices besides apply.

Most watchfaces from Connect IQ that I have tried are like this, and the only way to adjust settings is via the Connect IQ app on the phone. I want to say that I have encountered one or two that supported on-watch settings, but I may be remembering it wrong and thinking of some other app type.

  • The bug in the new firmware is, clicking "Watch face" does not list new watch faces or even let customizing existing watch face. Earlier it used to work.

  • It works for me as described above in 14.20... I am not familiar with earlier versions so not sure how much it might be different from earlier versions.  Now, it acts like a "carousel" or gallery of watchface images.

    Starting from the real watchface:

    1. Long-press UP to get into menu
    2. The first item is "Watch Face", press START to choose this menu item
    3. You see a "screenshot" of your current watchface before you started this sequence
    4. Press UP/DOWN to scroll through different watchfaces... at end of list is a screen with a big "+  Add New"
    5. When displaying a watchface you like, press START to get to the menu to "Apply", "Customize", "Delete"

The screenshots of the faces are not active so the time and other fields may show dummy values.

While scrolling with UP/DOWN to see different faces, a curved scrollbar appears on left edge of screen to show how far you are in the list of available faces.

For built-in faces, I see "Apply", "Customize", and "Delete".  For most Connect IQ faces I've installed, I only see "Apply" here. To customize or uninstall those, I have to use the Connect IQ app on the phone.

Selecting "Apply" with the START button will make it the new active watchface. Otherwise, exiting this area with BACK button presses will get you back to the real watchface without making changes.

  • Oh man ... Indeed it works. I got it wrong. Thanks for the detailed steps.
