255 Battery Drain...normal or poor battery??

I have kept a detaled track of the watch battery performance over the weekend.

As one of the metrics that was requested was battery depletion time from 100% to 50% that is what I tracked.

Fully charged to 100% at 10:15 a.m. Saturday morning.

1 hour walk with Sat IQ GPS reduced battery to 84% - a drop of 16%

At 2:45p.m. the battery was at 78% at which time I did a 90 minute indoor cycling session with the watch conected to a smart trainer and broadcasting heart rate. At the finish battery was at 76% (4:30p.m.)

At 10p.m. battery was at 72% - 28% reduced since fully charged approx. 12 hours earlier.

Sunday 8a.m. battery at 67% - a 5% overnight reduction.

At 10:45a.m. I did a one hour walk with Sat IQ GPS and an active LiveTrack session. Upon completion battery was at 59% - a loss of 8% which seems inconsistent with a very similar activity on the Saturday.

At 2:30p.m. I did a 90 minute indoor cycling session with the watch connected to a smart trainer and broadcasting heart rate. At the finish the battery was at 55% (4:15p.m.)

By 10p.m. the battery had reduced to 50% - taking 36 hours to reduce from 100% fully charged

What do people think - fair useage for battery drain or potential poor battery??

  • I think it's hard to say without knowing what other settings you're using. Differences in settings and active software seem to make a huge difference in battery consumption. It's really only long-lived when it is idle.

Do you have pulse-ox on all the time? What extra apps or widgets do you have installed, and how many use background processing? What watchface are you using and does it display updates every second or less often?

How much do you use the backlight? Do you have gesture backlight enabled?

Is bluetooth on all the time? Do you have a lot of notifications coming through all the time?

I think my 255 loses 2-3% during a one hour walk with automatic sat mode and the data fields showing multiple numeric values related to altitude, ascent, distance, and times and the little arc-shaped heart zone meter on the bottom. It seems to average 1/10 of that outside the activities.

When I tried the Mappily app, it really burned through the battery.

I recently installed the Battery Graph app, but haven't run it long enough for long-term history. For the last 60 hours it went from about 51% to 36% with a one hour auto-gps walk activity. But during this period I also did multiple syncs and app installs/uninstalls, and other app setup fiddling via Garmin Connect.

I generally don't leave bluetooth on unless I am trying to do things with the phone app. I don't really care for the on-watch notification feature, weather, etc.  I have been using 24x7 heart monitoring and the sleep tracking with HRV metric. I'm not using pulse-ox except for a few manual tests just for fun.

Edited to add: I think my watch lasted almost 14 days on the previous full charge, when I wasn't playing around with apps so much. Right now, it is estimating 6 days remaining at 36%, and I think this must be influenced by the prior history. It doesn't seem to be that it will last that long at the rate it's going the past couple days.

  • I'm using battery graph, charged at 80% 5days ago, now my battery is at 41%. This includes 3h of run with GNSS dual band GPS, 30 min of gym, 1 night of pulse-ox recording. I always wear the watch during day and night, connected with bluetooth all day and not at night. Your first activity used too much battery for just 1h of walk, the other sessions seems reasonable, I've never tried the live track of your second walk so I can't compare.

After a past update my battery once dropped fast immediately from 100 to 80, than started to discharge normally, try to reboot if that keep happening.

With my normal use that include around 3-4h of run (sat iq gps) and 2-3h of gym every week it takes my battery from 80 to 20% in 1 week, so using 60% if battery.

  • I have my Garmin 255s music from last Aug. , so almost 8 months usage.

open the application notification without vibration and light, show light when hand up during activity and after sunset.

I run about 4~5 times per week around 55~65 minutes each time.

The battery use 3% during sleep time, and each activity (the daily run) use 6~8%. the average spend 3 % for 5~6 hours.

therefore average use 15~20% per day, as take a rest 1~2 days so I could use the FR255s for 6 days when charge to 100%. that's for your reference.

  • Hi Ben, where is battery graph or where i can search it ?
