Run started with 554.71 meters?

Went out for a 6 mile run that I had set up as 1 mile zone 1, 4.5 miles zone 2, 0.5 miles zone 1. After just a few minutes, I looked down to see I was almost at 1 mile (I am much slower than this). So I ended up having to switch to zone 2 very early, and tack on some extra running to the end of the run. Not a big deal, but all the stats are messed up.

I exported the run to a tcx to see what was happening, and it appears my garmin simply started the run with 554.71 meters already having been covered. See attaached pic.

Is this a bug? Did I do something wrong? How can I avoid this very annoying occurrence in the future?
