Any tips for improving HP pick up while pool swimming?

I've had mixed success with recording my heart rate while trying to revive my swimming. One session it worked well and I got what I thought was a reasonable reading and load number, but since then I've swum further and faster and received a rubbish HR and minimal load number, despite the calorie estimate.

Needless to say, I'm both confused and unimpressed. Garmin support tell me there's no way to edit the load manually for an activity, but equally I don't understand why the load is apparently based purely on HR as an indicator of effort when there are other metrics available. (I think this is true for other activities too actually. Anyway, rather than turning this into another futile rage against the algorithm, I'm just wondering if anyone has worked out a way to optimise using a wrist HR for swimming?

Thanks,
Nick
