automatic recording of activities and their documentation in garmin connect

hey,

my old fitbit charge 4 could automatically record certain activities (walking, running, swimming, gymnastics) and document them quite accurately in the app without having to create and trigger the activities.

with the forerunner 255s, i have the problem that walking or cycling are recognised (walking via step detection), but are not automatically entered as an activity in the garmin connect calendar (all activities > running).

the only solution i know is to create the activities and start them manually, which is no problem before running, but for everyday activity (cycling in the city, then walking, cycling again) i don't want to keep triggering something on my watch, especially because you forget to do it. I just want to get an overview about ALL movement is do whilst the day.

is there a way to automatically record activities / movement in garmin connects calendar without having to manually trigger them?

thank you

  • walking or cycling are recognised

Yes, Garmin calls that „MoveIQ“. You can see those automatic activities in the Connect App when you review the daily heartrate.

but are not automatically entered as an activity in the garmin connect calendar

No, MoveIQ events will influence your Body Battery value, your recovery times etc. But they will not be registered as „full“ activities. Maybe this is, because important data like GPS is missing and Garmin decided, not register those.

is there a way to automatically record activities / movement in garmin connects calendar without having to manually trigger them?

No, not as far as I know. Would possibly be a new request.

  • I think it is possible to start a few types of proper activities automatically, at least walking with GPS in the Vivoactive series. I have not used it myself, but I see colleagues and friend doing it.

  • thank you, now i understand the watch a little better!

as a future feature, i could imagine that you could activate an option that immediately after recognising a movement phase (after 10 minutes) converts it into an activity and documents it (including the previous 10 minutes).

i cycle a lot and walk a lot in my everyday life, so i would like to have everything nicely documented and an overview.

for running itself i can cope with triggering the activity manually. :)
