Would it be possible to implement stride length without having to use the RD pod? It is only available in Garmin Connect as an overall average at the minute.

Guess that is not what you meant, but stride length is available, when you use the HR strap HRM Pro (+). You won’t need a footpod then. The HRM Pro has sensors for acceleration integrated, so they use it to calculate stride length.
I have no idea, if it would be possible to calculate single stride length (not just the overall average track length/steps) without an „external“ sensor, or if it is just generating extra revenue.
It would be possible. Garmin is now estimating running power without accessories, and they could calculate stride length from power and cadence (they probably calculate power from cadence and stride length already). The reason they don't present it to us could be as simple as not enough customer demand, or a way to make more people buy accessories.
After some thinking, I realise it is even simpler. You can compute it easily from pace and cadence.
If you use metric units for pace (min/km), simply start with 1000 [m/km], then divide by current pace [min/km], and then divide by current cadence [steps/min]. Then you will have your current stride length [m/step].
Yep it should definitely be possible based on that calculation. Also I find the RD pod's stride length can be too volatile sometimes so not always the best training tool for working on consistent stride length. Maybe a 30s smoothing might work like the 30s power
