My FR255 is in a boot loop all day after an attempt at a firmware update today

This morning my FR255 which was operating flawlessly prompted me that it was going to install an update in 60 seconds or something.  I let it do it's thing and minutes later to 12+ hours later it has yet to tun back on.

It just repeatedly reboots through this sequence:

  1. Garmin blue triangle logo
  2. Garmin Copyright Screen
  3. Converting GPX files
  4. Loading FIT data
  5. Repeat step 1

After I first noticed the loop I let it do it's thing for a few hours until it finally ran out of battery and died.  I put it on the charger for an hour and it's returned to the looping behavior.

How do I recover my FR255?

  • Have you tried to force it off by holding the light/power-button a long time?

  • I did this didn't work. Just continued to loop.

  • Was able to resolve this by doing the "Unprompted Reset".  Of course this deleted all my configurations and only a subset of features synced with my phone after repairing.  Very annoyed. Angry

It is recommended to read the steps in full below before performing them.

    1. Ensure the watch is powered off.
      • You may need to hold LIGHT for up to 30 seconds to turn the watch off.
    2. Press and hold DOWN, START/STOP, and BACK/LAP.
    3. Press LIGHT to power the watch on while holding these three buttons.
    4. After the first beep release START/STOP.
    5. After the second beep release the remaining buttons.
  • I have the same issue. Garmin worryingly silent on this. Just once I would like to see Garmin release software that has been properly tested in a real-world deployment.

  • Thanks for sharing this. I'll have a try with this...

Since nearly 10 days my watch is more or less electronic waste because of the last forced update...

    Maybe this helps...

  • In other news.... Garmin killed my new Forerunner 255!
Got an alert for a software download on the way home in the car from an orienteering event, hit "install" on the watch, waited for the magic to happen!
.... It didn't! Watch installed update and powered off to reboot but never came back up. Tried the usual, Soft ReSet, nothing....
Contacted Garmin Support.... call back - about 10 minutes, on the call for about 5 minutes then line dropped. Got an e-mail within a few minutes to ask some questions then nothing.... for over an hour!
Rang back and got connected fairly quickly with a Garmin Rep who sorted me out with a replacement.... only downside being they need my watch back first before they ship the replacement :(
    .... at least it's pre-paid.... small bonus!
So without stats for a week (at a guess) and will need to fire up the damaged 935 in the interim.... could have been worse (but not much).... could have been peak Urban season .... ROFL .... :)
