Strange behaviour of the backlight

This Forerunner 255 Music is my first Garmin watch, so I have no experience of whether what you see in the video is normal.
That is, despite the fact that I have turned off the backlight everywhere I can, it still comes on in certain cases (various sports, pay, measuring blood oxygen, etc.). I think this is a bug. What do you think, or does the clock behave like this for others?

  • Hey, girls and boys? Sunglasses Does the watch work like this for anyone else? If so, what do you think? Is it OK? Thinking Could someone please take a look at it on theirs?

  • I looked at mine (FR 955 that runs same firmware as 255) and it is the same as that if I turn all the settings off i.e when starting an activity it still comes on . I suppose that is so you can see what is happening.I have backlight on for all things so it is not an issue for me. I can't see the screen without the backlight in most situations so for me no issue .

  • Thank you for checking! I understand what you write, that you don't get this error, but it still an error in my opinion. The infuriating part is that I wrote to support, but they didn't understand the problem (which according to this doesn't only affect the 255), and they looked stupid. They wrote what to set, and then there will be no backlight anywhere. They did it despite the fact that I clearly described what and how it was set up (unfortunately, the video was not available at that time).
I think I'll send them the video now...

  • Have the same exact issue on my FR255 Music 5 months on (FW 14.20). Backlight turns on (and stays on - no timeout), when selecting an outdoor activity. A member of the Garmin Support Team confirmed the same issue on his/her FR955, but didn't sound to concerned or ready to escalate... :-(

  • This BUG has been around for a while. I have reported it on numerous occasions, but you like said, Garmin does not seem to care about the backlight constantly wanting to come on (sometimes infinitely), even when it is set not to, or the excessive battery drain that comes with the backlight erroneously coming on.

It also annoyingly comes on every morning during the morning report.

What is the use of having backlight settings if the watch does not respect them?

  • On the 14th of March. I got an e-mail from the support:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin. I have received information about the backlight issue. There will be a fix for this issue within our 2nd quarter.
You should be receiving an email when the software is released."

    Keep fingers crossed.

  • Had a +1 hour long chat sesson with the support team last week incl. uploading videos of the different scenarios, where the backlight turns on. For once the team member seemed to show some interest in the issue and promised to come back to me with an update ASAP. Agree, let's keep our fingers crossed (even though "within our 2nd quarter" could be as late as end of June)... :-|

BtW, anyone having issues with the watch vibrating when showing the Performance Condition alert during activities (with Vibration set to Off, obviously)? x-)

  • when I enter the garmin connect app and try to change the settings of the activities by entering the activities and apps section in the gc suddenly the gesture light is on untill clicking any buttons of the watch. I normally use no backlight this is a bug and this is not my first garmin and I think this bug is somehow related with yours

  • Some positive news. At least it is now acknowledged.
