SV 12.23: Forerunner 255 Series Rapid Battery Drain

I've had my watch for a few months and never had a battery drain issue until this morning where I found my battery had drained over 40% last night.  I haven't recorded an activity for a few days so it doesn't seem like it would be related to that.  The only things that have changed recently:

-A few days ago - Auto Updated to SV12.23

-Last night, because of the software update, I decided to change my GPS modes to the new "Auto Select", may be a coincidence but I will have to see if it continues.

-During the night last night I recall once when I rolled over seeing the blankets illuminated because of my watch was backlit, however it should not have been since I have Do Not Disturb on during sleep hours.

  • Same 40% overnight drop last night on 12.23. Had the problem on prior firmware and returned watch. First time with new watch and FW. No CIQ apps, stock watchface, went from 64% to 24%. But clearly an overnight problem...there was no significant drain during the day after early morning running activity (which did not use music or any external sensors). I did change GPS setting during the day from GC on the phone....from Auto Select to Multi...maybe coincidence there. I'm beginning to think the problem exists in the phone-watch communication via GC...seems to be the common denominator with the same problem on the last watch.

  • Yes, I've the same problem on FR255 12.23 which battery drained over 30% last night!!

  • Mine’s been perfect, even after updating to 12.23…no abnormal battery drain overnight.

  • Think I might have the answer to my rapid battery drain issue. I've been working with Garmin on it, so to be confirmed by them (they are logging battery information that will be uploaded when I sync). But, in an experiment this afternoon, I changed settings on the device via the Garmin Connect app (GCM) - GPS, data screens within the activities - and now I am experiencing a 10% drain in 1 hour and 21 minutes while watch is just sitting there. I haven't had the drain issue in more than a week....and haven't used GCM to change watch settings either. I think the workaround for now is to do a watch reset (15 secs holding down LIGHT button) after making changes on the watch using GCM. Will test that next.

  • I think you might be right as the only night I had the issue was right after I changed the GPS settings.  I reset the watch the next morning and haven't changed any settings since and haven't had any issues.

  • Oh no, I'm also experiencing rapid battery drain. Last night my watch lost almost 40 % :(

  • All-

Also, I can confirm with @GS answer about it being related to changing settings in Garmin Connect App for the watch.  To confirm this I changed a few activities GPS settings via the GCA and immediately after my watch has started to drain at an  accelerated rate.

  • Same as mine.

Only one thing that I had changed after updated firmware is setup GPS to auto select. After that, battery drain around 40% overnight. Then I change back to multi, the issue gone.

  • This just happened to me last night. I went to bed with 52% battery and woke up with 10%. I didn’t change any settings on the watch. I’ve had my Garmin 255 for a week, and up until last night I lost maybe 2-3% battery per night.
