Forerunner 255 Series Rapid Battery Drain

This is the 2nd time this has happened since getting the watch less than a month ago. Normal drain is about 2% overnight. I have shut-off WiFi, which I thought was the culprit after the first time. This problem has happened twice now, randomly. The drain DURING activity seems to be in line with Garmin battery assumptions. So, it's the General Use of the watch that is the problem. Maybe occasional overnight updating via BT? Or constant syncing via BT? Or BT gets 'stuck'? Any thoughts before I contact Garmin Support?

  • I used Stryd Zones the other day to compare to native power and I have not seen any extra drain since. I do not have any other CIQ on the watch.

I am on course for my usual 8 to 9 days between charges.

  • This night it happened again. Went to bed, 76% battery left, woke up 42% battery left. No connectiq datafields are installed, wifi, bluetooth are off, airplane mode on. I don't seem to experience higher battery drain after an activity, with or without Polar H10 cheststrap and during the day the battery drain is predictable. Though this morning it did drain faster after waking up, lost about 4% in a hour, then again I was up earlier then usual. Just rebooted the watch      I'm going to contact Garmin support about this issue as it is annoying that battery life is unpredictable because of this.

Edit: After rebooting the watch I checked and it is searching for the polar H10 even though I did set it to off after my activity yesterday, the cheststrap was connected through ANT. Does it start searching for the sensor somewhere during the night/at random, even though airplane mode is on? And how much battery drain does searching for a ANT sensor cause?  I will investigate further.

  • After removing CIQ apps/fields, I have not experienced the battery drain issue and closed it out with Garmin. One of the CIQ fields, Auxiliary HR, would search (by design) for a chest strap to connect, in addition to using OHR. So maybe that's related to the battery drain. I still use WiFi, BT, GPS All Systems, music, backlight.

  • I had uninstalled all CIQ fields, hoping that would also solve it for me. But unfortunately it didn't. So now I have done a factory reset. I'll have to wait another 2 weeks to see if it is solved. If not I will contact Garmin support.

  • Well, it happened again...no CIQ apps installed. Lost about 50% overnight, down to 12% this morning. Only thing I can think of is that I sent some workouts to the watch from the GC app on phone yesterday. Maybe that caused some kind of constant syncing via BT. Anyway, will contact Garmin on this but will likely just return watch at this point.

  • So this happened last night (19- 20 July)? Because I also had high battery drain last night. Yesterday just normal watch use, due to the heat it was an inactive day. I have already updated the watch to the latest software and done a master reset. None of that seem to have helped. I have contacted Garmin support, so lets see what they come up with. Unfortunately the return period for my watch has expired so returning it is not an option.

  • Yes, last night. Called Garmin and they think watch is defective. I will return it through original place of purchase, But Garmin (US) would have also taken it back as well.

  • All-
