Recommended training

Hi.

I am relatively a new / beginner runner without enough experience in sports. And I purchased Forerunner 255 a few days ago. This is the first Garmin for me in around 10 years. So I am new to both running and Garmin.

In my understanding, Garmin offers several kinds of advice or recommended training like 1) Garmin coach function and 2) daily recommendation.

Regarding the coach, it might be a very good program, but unfortunately, there are no coach programs for a full marathon, at least in Japan. And I am going to run a full marathon at the end of October and want to train myself for the marathon. Although the coach program for a half-marathon might be good in general, I don't imagine it would take into consideration the length of a full marathon.

So I am considering utilizing the daily recommendation program. What I meant is, for example, when I try to start "run", it would say "today you should take a rest" or "today you should run for 28 minutes at 7m40s pace."

My question is whether this daily recommendation program has taken into consideration the marathon I've inputted in the Garmin calendar. Today is the third day for me to use Forerunner 255. Yesterday's recommendation was a very light one, "today you should run for 28 minutes at 7m40s pace" as a recovery program. This "28 minutes @ 7m40s" is too light for me even though I understand it is for recovery. But obviously, Garmin doesn't know yet how I usually run.

So I was wondering this daily recommendation program has assumed I'm supposed to run a full marathon or not. Or any other useful function for the marathon?

Thank you in advance.

    • Use the race widget. Create an event on your Garmin connect calendar, upload the course if you have or input the distance, goal target for the race and after that your daily suggested workouts are for the marathon. You have base fase, building fase, peaking fase, taper fase, the marathon and after that the recovery fase. I'm following their suggested workouts for a marathon in November in the 955 and works great Thumbsup
  • Hi. Thank you. Yes, I confirmed the race widget shows the phases. In the meantime, so far, today's recommendation is still "30 minutes at 6m30s pace" or so.

If I ignore the suggestion and run faster and longer, will the program be revised to be faster and longer?

  • Well you can see the full week of suggestions go to run, hold menu button, select training and you can see the full week of suggestions, try running faster and see how it adjusts, I only use the weekly suggestions and if I run harder to really impact the load then it changes the suggestions but only usually after midnight I think, sometime even suggesting rest day. So maybe running Hader doesn’t pay off. All I can say the results are amazing for a binge runner. Great Vo2 max improvements running about 30k a week

  • Thank you so much. Yes, it seems the weekly schedule often changes. On a certain night, my sleep was pretty bad. Then the schedule of the next day was changed to "take a rest" although there had been a training menu for the day.
