Heart rate very high since 5.50

Over the last few weeks, I have got extremely high heart rates during runs, as this caused my VO2Max to drop dramatically I bought a Polar OH1+ optical HR strap a couple of days ago. Sure enough my reported HR dropped by about 30 to 40 BPM and my VO2Max has climbed 2 points in two days.

It is a real shame that I have to circumvent the 245 built in HRM like this. I never had any issues with the optical HR on my 645.

UPDATE 5th Dec 2020.

Although some people don't seem to think it relevant, my plummeting reported VO2Max is what alerted me to this issue as I don't generally obsess over precise HR values and the VO2Max is derived from the HR data. Since 24th Nov when I started using a Polar OH1+ HRM instead of the one built into the 245, my VO2Max has increased from 51 (the lowest I have ever seen) to 57.

In a normal course of events this would never happen.

  • Same here. Their support department is non existent.

    • Same here- used to work fine but then suddenly HR is all over the place and shows high readings ; warm up he takes ages to lock on- so after going too high eventually settles to only marginally higher I think and then when starting to warm down the readings go high again. This happened over the last 5 months or so; software is definitely the issue. Needless to say I won’t be buying another Garmin product unless this is fixed.
  • Before november I had zero problems. It used firmware version 5.30 then. Is it somehow possible to download that version and do a rollback?

  • First run with firmware 6.20, I ran without my Polar OH1 for the first time in months to see whether they have fixed the wrist HR problem without admitting anything.

Obviously N=1 but for this run the average HR from the watch was 133 which is in line with what the Polar gave me for my last three runs.

I will continue to monitor it.

  • I’ve always had that problem, it eventually corrects itself but often comes back. Took a while to work it out but it appears that the watch locks onto the cadence rather than the heartbeat. I now have to use another external HR band if I want to ensure accuracy. (wahoo Tickr Fit or a chest strap)

  • Could you perhaps record a run with both the 245 and Polar measuring your HR, and then compare the 2 averages?

  • Yes good idea and I just did so on a 6 mile run of moderate effort, it is bad news as per screen captures, the 245 optical sensor recorded an average of 158 BPM and the Polar OH+ recorded a completely believable average of 139.

  • Same problem here since 2? months. HR way too high in the beginning of the run. And later on in the run often HR suddenly peaks. FR 245 with version 6.20. Very frustrating. Thought it had to to do with my health, got realle concerned. Ran today with two watches, the F245 and an F220 with chestband. F220 didn’t have any peaks. Turns out that after running half hour or so, the F245 approaches the measurements of HR strap of th F220. The longer I was running the more the more it approached the F220 with strap. After reading all previous posts I conclude it’s the software on the F245. Really hope Garmin will fix it in the next version, because this way the watch does not have much value to me, as a runner training on HR zones.

  • Thanks. That is a massive difference, more than 10%. Also, what's more concerning is that it was a moderate effort, not a maxed out effort, where wrist based hr sensors usually struggle.

    Please look into this.

  • I also notice that the longer i run, the lower my HR gets for the same pace. Unfortunately, I have no HR strap to confirm the inaccuracies. Terribly disappointing since I heavily rely on HR data to gauge fitness and training load. It will be slightly better if it was consistently inaccurate.
