Can't pair to app. To phone yes, but not to app.

My phone shows it is connected via Bluetooth; the watch shows it is connected and shows notifications etc from my phone. But when I go to the app it can't sync with the device. So I can't use the Garmin app, can anyone help? New device out the box today, no prior usage on any phone. Latest app downloaded. I'm stuck.
