Bluetooth connectivity issue when starting activity

I have a FR245M since about a week, all updates installed (I even tested the below with the new 4.1 version), but it seems like it will have to go back to the shop if there is no solution for this issue. It is having severe problems staying connected to my bluetooth earbuds which renders it useless as I am following a start to run podcast.

FR245M with (also brand new) Jabra Elite Active 65T earbuds: it plays music fine until a couple of seconds after you enter the activity screen (Run activity), then it starts to get stuck in a loop where it is constantly reconnecting.. After many minutes, things stabilize and it is able to connect without any quality issue anymore. Deleting the earbuds and re-pairing while it's having the issue, does not help at all. Restarting the watch neither.

FR245M with Sony WF-1000XM3 earbuds: similar, in 'normal' mode there is no problem. The moment you open the activity screen, the music is constantly dropping and of bad quality, however these earbuds do not disconnect. The moment you go to the main screen, the music quality is perfect again. Here as well: after a while the issue seems to disappear, until the next time you want to go for a run. I have these earbuds already for months and they never had any issue when being connected to either smartphone or computers.

So my conclusion is that this is caused by the watch, not the earbuds, and some process is being started once you open that activity screen, which is interfering with bluetooth or music.

Does anyone experience the same issue and have a solution? Tips would be greatly appreciated!

(some threads are similar, like https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-245-series/208106/jabra-elite-65t-connection-drops-due-to-dynamic-running-pod though I'm not using a running pod and the solution provided there does not help - other threads also seem to record issues (watch reboots) when starting the activity screen)

  • I was having this issue becasue I set my headphones up via the "Sensor and Acc" options in the settings. Similar to where you pair yout HRM. You need to remove them from there. Then, Enter your Music settings (long press middle button while on Music widget) and go to headphones and add them there instead. This solved my issue for both my headphones. I think a recent update caused this confusion because it wasnt like this before.

  • I just got the FR245M a few weeks ago, specifically so I could ditch my music player and use my watch.  I purchased some nice earbuds (Sony WF-XB700).  I've had nothing but problems at the start of my run.

The bluetooth connects fine and stays connected.  I can play Amazon music without any issues.  But as soon as I try to start my run activity, the music cuts off from the earbuds.  According to the music time, it is continuing to play, buy there is no sound.  If I press pause then play, sometimes it'll play for a few seconds and then cut out.  After about 4-5 minutes of pressing play/pause and skipping tracks, the music will play and keep playing.

This is very annoying and a major drawback of my watch.

Did anyone find a fix for this problem with the Sony wf-1000xm3?

Update: since about a half year ago, this is resolved for me. Now I can start the music from any menu and any time, it will work without a glitch. I don't know why it now works, I always keep it up to date so maybe with one of the software updates? I also make sure not to add it as running pod when the watch proposes this to me, cfr other users where this was the cause. I always run with the Jabra Elite 65T so I haven't tested if it also works fine now with the Sony WF-1000XM3 - and I don't want to 'break' it again by messing around with the connected devices...

So with this issue resolved, I must say I am extremely satisfied with the device: the music, the GPS, all the stats, the coaching programs, the ability to create routes on Garmin Connect and upload them to the device,..

I hope you will also be able to find a solution!

  • Completely the same problem for me! I’ve also got the same airbuds as you, and its just a nightmare going out for a run. Did you resolve your issue?
