Bluetooth connectivity issue when starting activity

I have a FR245M since about a week, all updates installed (I even tested the below with the new 4.1 version), but it seems like it will have to go back to the shop if there is no solution for this issue. It is having severe problems staying connected to my bluetooth earbuds which renders it useless as I am following a start to run podcast.

FR245M with (also brand new) Jabra Elite Active 65T earbuds: it plays music fine until a couple of seconds after you enter the activity screen (Run activity), then it starts to get stuck in a loop where it is constantly reconnecting.. After many minutes, things stabilize and it is able to connect without any quality issue anymore. Deleting the earbuds and re-pairing while it's having the issue, does not help at all. Restarting the watch neither.

FR245M with Sony WF-1000XM3 earbuds: similar, in 'normal' mode there is no problem. The moment you open the activity screen, the music is constantly dropping and of bad quality, however these earbuds do not disconnect. The moment you go to the main screen, the music quality is perfect again. Here as well: after a while the issue seems to disappear, until the next time you want to go for a run. I have these earbuds already for months and they never had any issue when being connected to either smartphone or computers.

So my conclusion is that this is caused by the watch, not the earbuds, and some process is being started once you open that activity screen, which is interfering with bluetooth or music.

Does anyone experience the same issue and have a solution? Tips would be greatly appreciated!

(some threads are similar, like https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-245-series/208106/jabra-elite-65t-connection-drops-due-to-dynamic-running-pod though I'm not using a running pod and the solution provided there does not help - other threads also seem to record issues (watch reboots) when starting the activity screen)

  • I've got similar issue.

    1. Connecting headphones, eveything is ok with music.

    2. Starting Run activity, music quality is worse and it keeps breaking up (but hold BT connection)

//edit. Situation occurs also on "main" screen/watch face. Rebooting headphones works.

    3. I've tried pairing and rebooting watch again but it ddn't helped. This situation occurred 3 times in a row, and in my case always helped restarting headphones (Huawei AM61) or maybe as you said it just need some time to get "stabilized".

Not funny situation since my watch is brand new (not even a week since I got it).

    • I’m having the same issue of continues disconnection and reconnection of BT for Jabra 65t, immediately after run activity is started on my FR245. This renders my headphones useless. The problems started last week after upgrading to 4.0 APAC.

    Looking for urgent solution.

The way I have found to make this issue 'bearable', is the following:

    1. enter the activity screen (from the main screen, press upper right button)
    2. wait 5 minutes (I put my running gear on during this time, and get to my starting point)
    3. press upper right again (=start activity)
    4. long press lower left button (=music screen), connect to your earbuds and start playing music, this should now work without any interruption
    5. (go back to the activity screen (lower right button))

Step 3&4 can be swapped. Just make sure never to exit the activity environment because then you have to start over with the 5 minutes of waiting. There seems to be some sort of 'behind the screens booting' procedure every time you're entering the activity environment, which disturbes the bluetooth/music.

I hope this will work for you as well!

  • Thanks for your reply.

But no, this didn't work for me on my FR245 and iPhone X.

Whatever I do, headphones disconnect the moment I enter activity screen.

Will now raise the issue with Garmin Support online.

  • Received the following response from Garmin Suport:

"For the serial number you provided, it seems your device is Forerunner 245 for SEA version without Music but we are afraid it does not seem supporting Headphone. Meanwhile, please be also kindly informed Jabra Elite Active 65t  is not included in the compatible headphone of FR245 for Music version listed below.

Meanwhile, I have found a workaround as follows:

    1. Keep my FR 245 in Airplane On Mode

    2. 'Wear' my Jabra 65t, connect to my iPhone X and start my music playlist. Jabra 65t headphones nicely connect and play

    3. Wear my shoes etc and get ready for the run, while music is playing through the headphones

    4. Go outside and start the run activity on my FR 245 in normal fashion.

    5. Go for the run

    6. BT between headphones and iPhone hold throughout the activity and can enjoy music while running!

  • I also have this connection problem with my headphones.

With the firmware 4.00 everything was perfect.

  • Airplane Mode worked for me as well

Same issue here, also with Jabra Elite Active 65t.

  • Did you ever find a fix for the sony wf-1000xm3?

Same issue as you, as soon as i go into activity mode the music cuts out
