Elevation No Longer Displaying?

I have a couple questions about my new 245 but will ask them in separate threads to keep the topics clean.  First is: I am using the watch face Four Fields: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/568d44f3-b607-4db8-a57a-9368acdc144c  I have the lower left field set to show elevation.  It was working fine for the first few days.  Now that field only shows 4 horizontal lines and the ^ elevation symbol.  It will no longer show the actual elevation.  I do not think I changed any setting that would have turned the elevation off but I am not 100% sure.  In any case I can not find a setting that seems like it would control elevation display.  Any ideas on what may have happened or how I can get the elevation to display again?  Thanks!

  • Maybe not.  I don't have a 245 and Garmin may have omitted that widget.  I was under the assumption it was available.  That's OK though.  There's a widget available in the IQ store called "Simply Altitude".  That will work for your test.

OK.  Thanks for your quick and helpful responses!   I will do that and reply.

I downloaded and installed Simply Altitude.  It shows both on my phone app and the watch as installed.  But, on the watch rather than displaying an elevation, it just says "not available"?

  • Well, unfortunately that's a problem.  You're 2 for 2 with the data not being sent.  I suggest you contact support directly.  It's best and much quicker if you're able to call instead of emailing them.  One last thing.  Are you able to get a good GPS fix if you go to start an activity?

OK.  Talked to Garmin and learned some things I will post here for others that may come across this thread.

The issue was with my not fully understanding how the 245 hardware works.  It is not that intuitive but I will explain as best as I can.

I knew the 245 does not have a barometric altimeter but uses GPS for apps, watch faces, data fields, etc. to show elevation.  However, elevation only shows when GPS is on.  Enabling GPS on the watch does not "turn it on" all the time.  The only time GPS will be on is when an activity is being run and recorded.  If no activity is going, GPS is off.  This is to save battery.

So the reason I am not seeing the elevation on the watch face now is that I am not actively running an activity.  And the reason I did see it on the watch face before was that at that time I was actively recording a hike.  At first I did not understand how I could have seen elevation on the Four Fields watch face when hiking as the default screen when hiking is the screen showing all my custom data fields for my hiking activity.  However, during that activity, you can scroll down a few screens to display the watch face rather than the hiking activities data fields.  When you do that, and I did do that, because you are technically still in the activity, and GPS is running, the Four Fields watch face will display elevation.

So the take away from this is that my 245 is working as it should, and Garmin should have included a barometric altimeter on this watch.  I still love the 245, but the barometric altimeter would have been a very good hardware addition as that probably would have allowed elevation at all times rather than just during activity recording.

Well so much for the elevation only displaying when an activity is recording. I have not started any recordings of activities today and this evening I looked at my watch face and surprise..... the elevation was being displayed and correctly.  A few minutes later it was blank again.  I guess there is no figuring this one out.

  • If elevation field stop showing it is because youy have put the GPS mode to Galileo if you switch it back to Glonass it will allow to customize your garmin to show elevation
