Forerunner 245 Series SW 3.90 and ANT/BLE/BT 5.01 --bluetooth pairing fails with garmin connect 4.25.2 (android 10)

My forerunner 245 music just received the 3.90 update and bluetooth pairing no longer works with my android 10.0 phone (Huawei mate 10 pro) and garmin connect 4.25.2.

What I tried so far to solve this:

- bluetooth on/off (phone and watch)

- removing/adding the watch to the known list in Garmin Connect

- clearing cache/data

- reinstalling the app

- resetting watch to factory defaults

- resetting the watch using garmin connect on computer

My observations when trying to re-add the watch to garmin connect:

- watch in pairing mode --> tells me to  download garmin connect then "go to mobile app to add the device"

- I launch the app, go to "devices", "add devices", the watch is detected, the screen tells me to locate the the PIN code on the watch screen. The watch screen is stuck at the "Go to mobile app to add device." screen

- Nevertheless, I try to press the "connect device" button

- phone screen shows a loading bar and tells me it's configuring the watch

- phone tells me the pairing has failed and says some devices require updates to pair with Huawei cellphones... Tells me to use garmin express.

- I connect the phone to the computer, start garmin express

- the garmin express app sees the watch and tells me updates are available (spotify, which I don't use) and sync the watch (synced just now on the top right of the screen)

- tried removing spotify and add deezer (got redirected to web browser, app store, etc, then back at the garmin express) --> worked fine. Sync is said to be complete.

- tried doing the garmin connect/add device procedure

- still failing.

Any idea ?

BTW, it's frustrating that updates are not tested prior to deploying to customers devices. This is the 3rd time that an update requires a reset of this watch and some kind of voodoo on the phone.

  • For any users experiencing connectivity issues, we first recommend viewing our FAQs here. If these are unsuccessful, please make sure you have deleted the device from both the app and your phone's bluetooth settings, before power cycling both and pairing again.

Forerunners pair through the Garmin Connect Mobile app and not in the phone's bluetooth settings.

  • This works well. I have the same problem this morning when my watch informed me it has updated its software. Removed the pairing in Garmin Connect app and pair it again but failed at the pairing stage. The only pairing in Garmin Connect works after I also removed the pairing from the phone's Bluetooth as well.

  • My partners 245Music would no longer pair with her pixel 2 on Android 10, no idea what happened but factory resetting did nothing. We had to return the watch to the store. Thankfully the replacement works. I have a Pixel 4 on Android 10 and am running into issues where it refuses to stay paired, then a day or so later it magically reconnects again. Not sure if it's a phone or watch issue.

  • Exactly the same issue on a Forerunner 645M when it updated software to v6.50. Did all of the above steps but it would not pair. Was not until I deleted it from my phone's BT settings that I could get it to work (thanks Chris). Also very frustrating as its not the first time this has happened.. and each time I loose all my activity training screens (and settings), my music, and my garmin wallet (which I have to reauthenticate with the bank). Turning off auto software updates.

  • For reference in case you have the problem again, I didn't need to reset the watch so kept all the set-up etc. Deleting it from the phone's previously connected BT devices was enough.

I'm experienced the same issue. I use OnePlus 6, Garmin 245 Music, and Garmin Connect 2.49.

The issue has been resolved after I remove garmin 245 in my Bluetooth setting then try again from Garmin connect.
