Forerunner 245 Series SW 3.90 and ANT/BLE/BT 5.01 --bluetooth pairing fails with garmin connect 4.25.2 (android 10)

My forerunner 245 music just received the 3.90 update and bluetooth pairing no longer works with my android 10.0 phone (Huawei mate 10 pro) and garmin connect 4.25.2.

What I tried so far to solve this:

- bluetooth on/off (phone and watch)

- removing/adding the watch to the known list in Garmin Connect

- clearing cache/data

- reinstalling the app

- resetting watch to factory defaults

- resetting the watch using garmin connect on computer

My observations when trying to re-add the watch to garmin connect:

- watch in pairing mode --> tells me to  download garmin connect then "go to mobile app to add the device"

- I launch the app, go to "devices", "add devices", the watch is detected, the screen tells me to locate the the PIN code on the watch screen. The watch screen is stuck at the "Go to mobile app to add device." screen

- Nevertheless, I try to press the "connect device" button

- phone screen shows a loading bar and tells me it's configuring the watch

- phone tells me the pairing has failed and says some devices require updates to pair with Huawei cellphones... Tells me to use garmin express.

- I connect the phone to the computer, start garmin express

- the garmin express app sees the watch and tells me updates are available (spotify, which I don't use) and sync the watch (synced just now on the top right of the screen)

- tried removing spotify and add deezer (got redirected to web browser, app store, etc, then back at the garmin express) --> worked fine. Sync is said to be complete.

- tried doing the garmin connect/add device procedure

- still failing.

Any idea ?

BTW, it's frustrating that updates are not tested prior to deploying to customers devices. This is the 3rd time that an update requires a reset of this watch and some kind of voodoo on the phone.

  • I can confirm this. My wife's 245 will no longer pair as of Watch SW 3.9 and Connect 4.25.2. Phone is a OnePlus 6.

  • Update: I've managed to sort it. If you go into your phones BT settings and look for previously connected devices, delete the 245 from there and try again from Garmin Connect. Worked for me.

I'm experiencing the same issues today. Unfortunately unpairing the watch didn't work for me.

By the way, how do you stop these automatic updates?

  • Did you also delete it from the "Previously Connected Devices" menu on your phones Bluetooth settings?

I clicked unpair, then it showed up under "available devices".

Typed in the pin code from the watch when pairing and android shows it as connected. Still stuck at "searching" in the app when I try to add it.

  • I think that you have to pair it from the Connect app and not from the Android OS Bluetooth. I hit a similar issue and from what I remember I did the following:

    1) Remove the Bluetooth pairing from the Android OS Bluetooth

    2) Remove the device from the Connect app

    3) Close the connect app from the Android background app list (I just closed everything)

    4) Re-add the device from within Connect as a new device

That worked for my 245 Music when it got "lost" during an upgrade.

  • Just got the new update and I cannot connect my Garmin 245 to my phone anymore. I tried all the tricks here but nothing works. I can't get my watch connected anymore to Bluetooth.

That did work after a reset of the watch! I had to pair it through the app.

Thank you so much for the help.

  • Same problem here. You have to remove the device from Connect and re-pair it.

I always try out the BETA versions, so someone did a some last minute changes!

  • Update:

    short story:

I manage to get the phone and watch to pair again. A factory reset of the phone was necessary.

longer story and a lot of guessing:

    • Chris mentionned he got his wife's watch paired with the cellphone by removing the watch from known devices in the phone BT settings.
    • This made me wonder if the OS keeps a record of BT devices that apps are managing on their own (Huawei EMUI tells me to use Garmin connect to pair the watch and the watch never appears in the BT settings)
    • I tried to reset the phone network connections (settings/system/reset(reinitialize?)/restore network settings). This warns me that all connections, including BT, WiFi are reset. --> Not conclusive
    • I ended up resetting the phone, reinstalling everything and TADA, I get passed the "Go to mobile app to add device" on the watch and it provides a PIN code. The rest works as intended
    • Now, let's get into pure speculations: resetting the phone made sure that no trace of the watch has been kept on the phone (no PIN, no hardware address, nothing). When the phone has been instructed to pair with the watch by Garmin Connect, it had no PIN for the device ande proceeded with a pairing procedure (watch ends up issuing the PIN on the screen). Before the reset, the phone had a PIN for the watch and proceeded with a normal BT connection.

    TL;DR: try (in order)

    • clearing Garmin Connect cache & data
    • try resetting BT settings of your phone
    • try a factory reset of the phone (last resort)
