Tried off/on both device and phone, disconnecting from the app (now can't add it back), factory reset of both device and phone. I just get an error message saying "failed to pair".
Any other suggestions other than returning to Garmin for refund?

We have to remove Bluetooth devices also from phone menu. then adding again will successful.
Also, on this sort of post please state what version software is on the watch, what phone you have and OS software version.
Had the same problem. Went on Garmin chat and learned that the previous pairing I made with my iPad was the culprit. I had to delete the iPad's connection with the watch entirely in order to get the watch…

I had to delete the iPad's connection with the watch entirely in order to get the watch to pair and connect with my iPhone. Lesson learned - don't try dual connections with both an iPhone and iPad.

True . I would add do the same for any nearby mobile devices that might have your Garmin device in its Bluetooth settings.
This fixed it for me! Forget Bluetooth device from phone settings and it paired in the app instantly after.
