Tried off/on both device and phone, disconnecting from the app (now can't add it back), factory reset of both device and phone. I just get an error message saying "failed to pair".
Any other suggestions other than returning to Garmin for refund?

We have to remove Bluetooth devices also from phone menu. then adding again will successful.
Also, on this sort of post please state what version software is on the watch, what phone you have and OS software version.
Had the same problem. Went on Garmin chat and learned that the previous pairing I made with my iPad was the culprit. I had to delete the iPad's connection with the watch entirely in order to get the watch…
When you do an initial connect via Bluetooth to Garmin Connect make sure to also turn on/ activate location (GPS) on your mobile phone. Connect requires permission to location in order to set up your device. Normally once the device is set up and synced once, no need to activate location anymore. Should work fine afterwards. Please try.
One our to try to connect my iPhone 12 to my Garmin. I uninstall the app because I have problem that the Garmin stop sleep tracking and now I have nothing.... yes after 1,5 our and a lot of restart of mobile and watch it works. Garmin have som things to work on there to get it easy for us.
