White spot on Garmin Forerunner 245

I bought my Forerunner 245 (no music) in May of this year and have been really happy with the product. However, a big white spot appeared recently and it has not gone away after about 5 days. The spot is even there when the watch is turned off. Is there anything I can do about this?

  • Please reach out to your local team through support.garmin.com since we are unable to process exchanges through the forums. We are sorry you ran into this, but we will make sure to find the quickest resolution possible for you.
  • They will exchange it but charge you. Mine is two years old and they are charging $188 to replace. I’m just going to live with it until I buy something new.

  • I had the same problem. Since it was still under warranty, they replaced it at no additional cost. Great service.

  • I have exactly the same issue of dead pixels ... TWICE! ... first time was several months of use ...  Forerunner 245 was replaced ... now again exact same place [just in from backlight button] ... after over 12 months of use. This is clearly a latent design issue ... I now awaiting [again] on Garmin's response.

  • This is clearly a latent design issue ...

    No, just bad luck.

I had my FR 245 for 25 months and display was as new. Sold it now and changed to a FR 255

  • No, this is indeed a known manufacturing problem. (Of course bad luck is also part of it, 'cause it doesn't happen to everyone, certainly not twice, but it's not a one in a million problem. It's known to many)

  • this is indeed a known manufacturing problem

I am aware, that this issue exists. I know it from this forum and I also know someone personally, that once had the white spot issue on a Fenix (that was replaced).

Sure some of the MIP displays have errors and this is one of them. Maybe it is also related to the manufacturing process, I don‘t know.

But please remember, every display technique has errors, also LEDs (faulty pixels for example) and OLEDs. So I think, saying „it is a design issue“ is not right.

Let‘s assume, one percent of Garmins MIPs have white spot over their lifetime. The chance of having two faulty devices in a row is then 1/10000 or 0,1 promille.

    I call that bad luck.

  • Thank you Gavriel. Yup agree, statistically its indeed just bad luck … for both myself and the brand … I’m however confident Garmin will assist. Given my relationship with Lady Luck, I am  somewhat apprehensive to again accept same model as replacement … hopefully Garmin had by now fixed the glitch.

  • I've had two separate patches on my watch at roughly 5 and 10 on the clock.

I've noted that by completely discharging the battery and leaving the watch for days (to the point where I need to resync time) the 10 patch disappeared and the 5 patch has significantly shrunk.

  • That's interesting. Thank you. I'm going to try that.
