FR245 Garmin Coach Run/Walk Setting

I have signed up for Garmin Coach Jeff's Run/Walk/Run program for half marathon. There is a Run/Walk/Run scheduled for this weekend. But there is no option to choose run/walk timings. Looks like Run/Walk alerts are not working for these automatic workout schedules.

Please let me know how to set run-walk timings for this workout shown below (no edit option available) in the watch:

  • Alerts do not work with Garmin Coach workouts whcih are assigned by the system... If it is a normal run, then all the alerts works...

Also have Fenix 5.   My coach session went inactive after it thought I was skipping walk/run workouts.  I was actually doing them but using the interval training feature and not the coach workouts, because of this issue with no alerts.   So it really doesn’t work well for those of us wanting to do intervals.  I am hoping for a solution soon.

  • Same issue for me. I use headphones so used my Interval time app for the run/walk ratio to ring for each run/walk section. It comes over my music. Set and forget. Yes it is annoying that you can not integrate this into the Coach programme. I also wonder why the goal pace sessions are run at goal pace including the walk breaks - does not quite make sense to me. A forum would be handy. Perhaps a FB group for Garmin Galloway Half Plan Runners would not go astray.

  • I totally agree... Garmin should connect users with Coaches in some way.. either forums or something else. We do see some bugs in the plans / doubts but nobody from Garmin supports. Garmin support email will give you standard customer care answers. There is an unofficial FB group created by few Garmin Coach users https://www.facebook.com/groups/324767691546393 you may get some answers from others there.

  • Yesterday I was disappointed too. In Endomondo with a phone, at intervals within the training plan there are voice messages when to run faster when to rest. In the case of the Garmin watch and the training plan, the default application is only vibration, but it is also unknown why there are different vibration lengths. One for heart rate, another for interval and rhythm change. At minus 5 outside and fast running, it is not pleasant to constantly look at the watch. I am disappointed, a running watch for several hundred dollars and is worse in this aspect than an app for $ 20 a year. Garmin, will you fix it?

I came here because of the same complaint. Now reading the official comment above, I bet this is a liability issue. We agreed to some fine print when starting out a Coach program in Garmin Connect. Somebody probably got themselves injured while running and sued Garmin for directing them to run too much. Or lawyers anticipated this scenario and limited the alert function during coaching runs.

Nike Run Club app also has training programs and those don’t even give the option to Run-Walk, so I got a Garmin watch for the run-walk coaching. Another way to look at this is that Garmin is at least making some of personal coaching aspects accessible to wider audience. They are saying even though the coaching gives you suggestions, it’s still up to you for determining how much to push and when to stop. If you get hurt, it’s on you. Else it can’t be responsible because it’s not a human coach or a medical staff monitoring you. It can bankrupt Garmin. The limitation seems to be business risk, not ability or will.

  • Try a work around. Press lap button twice when it’s time to run/walk/run. This will skip to cool down phase then finish the workout. But instead of Save, you Choose Resume. From now on the Presets alerts Of run/walk/run will start.

The inconvincente is to monitor the distance and then a cool down time yourself.

    Hope it helps.

nice workaround will try this today. thanks!

  • That's a smart trick! Thanks

  • I understand the liability as a reason to not prescribe a run walk interval, but Garmin should allow users to program a walk run interval in the workout or use the walk/run intervals set by users during the "run" portion of the workout.  It makes not sense to just keep trying to track these intervals manually when we paid so much for a device to do it for us!
