HRM 600 incorrect daily step count when paired to Forerunner 970 and Connect app

I have a Forerunner 970 and HRM 600.   If I use the HRM 600 with no watch and start an activity with the Connect app it adds to my daily steps properly when it syncs with the Connect app.

If the HRM 600 is paired to the watch and the Connect app, if I do an activity like hiking on the watch, the HRM 600 massively overcounts my daily step totals.

Here is an example:

Daily steps before hike:  3302

Hiking activity steps:  8448

Daily steps after stopping watch activity:  11,000 (rounded due to watch face)

Daily steps after HRM 600 syncs with Connect app:   21,000

I thought TrueUp was supposed to prevent this from happening?  I don't want to have to unpair my HRM 600 from the Connect app every time I use it with a watch activity.   Is there a fix planned for this?

Thanks in advance.

  • That doesn't seem unreasonable.

Yes, you are right, it does not. But if there is a bug affecting your configuration, causing the double counting, then you can wait a few months before…

  • This does not happen with my HRM 600 and Instinct 3. Is your FR 970 set as the Primary Wearable Device, or do you have yet another watch that is the PWD? Normally, when you use the PWD, the steps come from it, and the ones from other devices are ignored, so it is strange it does not happen with your watch.

  • I only have the one watch.    I don't even have an option in the Connect app to select Primary Wearable Device.   However, I do see in the Garmin Connect webpage that my Forerunner 970 is set as my Primary Wearable and Primary Training Device.

  • I understand that you have the HRM connected both to your watch and the HRM600. I use the same combination and had issues with the intensity minutes, when the HRM was paired to my 970 and to the connect app on my iPhone aswell. When finishing a run the data from the watch was uploaded/synchronized to/with my watch, but after a few miutes the data from the HRM600 was synchronized aswell, and this messed up the IM's, counting my IM's from Z1 as Z3. After deleting the HRM from the Connect app on my iPhone, the problem was solved.

I discussed this issue with Garmin Support, and they admitted there is an issue with the HRM.

Maybe you can try to delete the HRM from the connect app, and do another walk.

  • I need the HRM connected to my Connect app so I can record my martial arts without the watch, which is the main reason I got the strap.   The other reason I got it was for the HRM to record more accurate steps while I hike with hiking poles, since those are undercounted on the watch.    Just really asking when these problems with TrueUp or whatever will be fixed.

  • TrueUp should prevent happening what happens to your steps, and my intensity minutes. But like a said, Garmin is aware of issues (with trueUp?) with the HRM600.

I didn't had issues with my steps, when the HRM was paired with my 970 and the Connect app. Only IM's.

Let's hope is will be solved soon with a software update

  • Garmin is aware of issues (with trueUp?) with the HRM600.

I do not think it is a problem with HRM 600. I have my HRM 600 paired with the watch as well as with Garmin Connect, and not get any duplicate step counts. Perhaps a problem with given watch model.

  • That's what I thought aswell. To check I received another HRM600, but this has the same issue.

Weird thing is that my issue with the IM's didn't happen from the start, but after a few weeks of using the combo. In the mean time I did some tests myself:

    - Did an several easy runs in only Z1 using the 970 with the HRM600

    - Save it to my iPhone, and checked the data. It said no IM's.

    - But after a few minutes (when the data from the HRM was combined) I had IM's in Z3.

When using the 970 stand alone and did an easy run in Z1, the data in Connect was correct.

The remark of Garmin being aware was a reply from them after I addressed the issue to Garmin Support.

  • Could be, I am using new watch (FR970) and new monitor (HRM 600).

  • I need the HRM connected to my Connect app so I can record my martial arts without the watch

    It doesn't make sense.
Why you don't use your watch instead of Garmin Connect?
Just start Martial Arts activity on you watch and leave it in locker, your HRM will record all data and synchronize with your watch after your training.
I think you have Martial Arts activity on your watch.

  • Because the instructions say if you are using the HRM in standalone mode you should start with the Connect app?   Also, still doesn't fix my step count issue.    There are probably all kinds of convoluted workarounds, I just want it to work correctly as advertised.   That doesn't seem unreasonable.
