The watch will show the HR from the external sensor only when an activity is in progress. If you did not start any activity, you can record the HR from the strap into all the-day HR, as long as the watch is not worn. If you turn off the watch, and if the strap is paired with Garmin Connect, you can then see the HR from the strap live on the HR glance of the app, regardless whether an activity is in progress or not.
