The HRM 600 pod is extremely hard to remove it, and even while holding the strap in place the clip on the strap is already lifting after a week. For sure this must be a design fault and you should issue new straps that do not clip so strongly. Especially if the manual suggests to remove strap to clean after just 7 uses.
It is poor design. Mine is the same. Put a plastic lever of some kind under the pod clip to separate the two. Should probably ship with something like that.
I don't know what was changed. I compared both, but could not really see a difference. Only that removing the pod was easy on the new one.
