How to make sure the detected heartrate comes from HRM pro+ in stead of Fenix 7?

So, I'm aware this topic has come up before but the answers are not very detailed somehow. During a run yesterday I accidentally had an itch under my watch and saw the green lights solid on, which indicates that the HR sensor of the watch is active. My HRM pro+ was connected (went out of activity and checked), but the wrist sensor stayed active upon re-entering the activity.

Surely there must be a better way than to manually disable the watch HR sensor before starting a run? Does anyone have a clue?

  • The sensor stays on so that the watch now’s when you take it off. This is needed for the Wallet. If there is a HRM connected via ANT/BT, the Fenix 7 takes it instead of the OHR.
On Fenix 8 there is a fallback that you can disable, it was called something with automatic source. I never had any issues with my Epix Gen 2 using OHR when a HRM was connected

    • Thanks for the answer, I just assumed something was wrong when I saw the watch sensor active and disabled it completely temporarily.
So basically, always when the hr sensor is connected, the watch will take that data for the heart rate?

Unless the HR Source Switching is disabled, the watch may switch between the HR sources, and use the wrist HR sensor instead of the external HRM, if it deems the data from the external sensor invalid (or missing).

You can check, which sensor was used with the help of the FIT File Viewer - when an external sensor is used, you can see three HR charts: "Heart Rate", "Wrist Heart Rate", and "External Heart Rate". The first one is the curve actually used for the stats, while the remaining two represent each sensor separately. By superposing the graphs HR & External HR, you can see whether there are some parts where its data was not used.

  • Does the Fenix 7 do a automatic switch if it thinks the HRM is faulty?

Assuming you have a recent firmware version, then yes. See more details, including the list of devices compatible with the HR Source Switching, here: What is Heart Rate Dynamic Source Switching? | Garmin Customer Support

The setting is in Sensors & Accessories » Wrist HR » Source Switching
