Hi,
I wonder if it is possible/recommended to use the HRM Fit for swimming? How accurate is it underwater? Provided a sports bra-like swimsuit is worn (something like a "surfer"-type bikini top) of course. I haven't found anything in user's guide.

I haven't read the manual, but I don't see anything indicating it has memory (like a HRM-Swim has) so it would not be useful for swimming, as the transmission of the signal from the HRM to the watch through water is not possible.
Per DCR it says
"Given the unit’s lineage with existing Garmin HRM-PRO series straps, that means it maintains features like advanced running metrics, offline data caching, indoor run/treadmill running pace data transmission, as well as tracking steps/calories/intensity minutes even when a watch isn’t worn"
So maybe it can?

tracking steps/calories/intensity minutes even when a watch isn’t worn"
So maybe it can?
In that case, try it out if it is possible to download HR data from it; wear the strap, start an activity, leave the watch somewhere out of reach, return to watch, save activity and it should download automatically.
Judging from the specs it can: www.garmin.com/.../1132094
The manual states: "You can start a timed activity on your compatible paired Garmin® device, and the heart rate monitor records your heart rate data even if you move away from your device. For example, you can record heart rate data during fitness activities or team sports where watches cannot be worn.
Your heart rate monitor automatically sends your stored heart rate data to your compatible Garmin device when you save your activity. Your heart rate monitor must be active and within range (3 m) of the device while data is transferred."
so yes, if it works for fitness, it should work for swimming. However there is nothing in the manual about swimming. I'd say, ask Garmin Support to make sure.
