Temperature, steps sensor alternatives

I'm planning to do hikes with trekking poles and as far as I could find on the net the built-in step counter of the watch (fr965) won't perform well with poles do I am investigating what options I have. Are there any alternatives to stryd?

Also thinking about a temperature sensor. Are there any alternatives to Tempe? Will any of the temperature sensors in AliExpress work? I'd like to connect it to the watch so that the temperatures are recorded to the hiking activity.

  • Every ANT+ or ANT+/BLE foot pod will work, but they are quickly going out of fashion so they can be hard to obtain. You can have a look at the ANT+ website to see which devices support the Foot Pod specification. Adidas, Geonaute, Garmin, Suunto even, there were many around. BTW a footpod will accurately record steps, but as far as I know only steps registered by the accelerometer in the watch count towards daily stepgoals.

Only the Tempe sensor works as an external temperature sensor.

  • Only the Tempe sensor works as an external temperature sensor

    And that is being dropped.

  • Thank you for the reminder. I meant to buy more because they were getting scarce. They are still available on Amazon for example. And if you buy the Marq Adventurer on Garmin.nl, you get a Tempe bundled with that, for only 1600 euros.

But shame on Garmin for abandoning the Tempe. From what I hear/see, Tempes are pretty popular.

Ooops! you just saved me some money and disappointment Slight smile

  • Which watch do you have? I am not 100% sure of the newer watches like Forerunner 956/955 or Fenix 8. I have a FR955, I can do a quick test with my foot pod.

  • fr965.

I'd like to use it both for running on treadmill (if it helps the distance measurement with changing cadence/stride while running compared to the fr965) and for walking with poles (I mention this, because I read that the garmin pod isn't great at slow speeds or unsteady cadence, thus not very good for walking)

I am thinking about a 2nd hand Adidas miCoach foot pod, though as I understand it's the same as the Garmin was, so it might not bee the best for walking.

Also I heard that some (probably the newer) versions of the Garmin Foot pod had wind sensor in it. Anyone has information about this? Experience?

  • There was/is a Stryd with a wind sensor. It was so expensive I did not look into it at all. Anyone know of a Garmin FP with wind sensor? I am also interested!

The miCoach foot pod does the same thing as any other foot pod and it will work well for cadence and pace, also indoors. It will have to be calibrated, Garmin has auto-calibration whenever you run or walk outdoors with the pod. Running and walking result in different calibration factors, that you can view and set manually in the sensor's settings.

I just did a test walk outdoors with a footpod and a FR955, and tried all sorts of things to make the watch stop stepcounting, like carefully holding the watch in my hand, trying to keep it steady, but it still counted steps. When I put the watch down on my car and walked around it, it did not count steps, but also didn't register distance because the watch was stationary. So I tested with the Indoor Walk activity and the watch on the table, it registered distance and apeed, but no steps.

I used to do a lot of Nordic Walking with Fenix 5Plus and 6, and these did register steps. However I never paid attention to the accuracy and I never had any training for technique, I tend to go quite fast on flat terrain, and bang my poles down with some force, other Nordic walkers I see around here never do that, to me it seems like they are going slower and more or less dragging the poles.

  • Anyone know of a Garmin FP with wind sensor?

    It doesn't exist.
