What device for heart rate and water temperature?

Can anyone recommend a device that can be used for swimming and will show both heart rate and water temperature?

It is for my 77 year old dad who swims in the sea year round, not any great distance mainly to aid recovery post running.

He just wants these two stats.

If it was capable as doubling up as a run watch (which he already has) that would be great.

Thanks.

  • You can best check it in the manuals of the devices to make sure, but any of the watches that have an Open Water Swim activity record the water temperature. It is recorded in degrees, so the resolution of the data is not very high. The temperature sensor is inside the watch, it takes some time for the watch to get at the same temperature as the water.

Some devices (Fenix 7, Forerunner 955) can be set to record heartrate from the built-in optical heart rate sensor during swimming. Alternatively, a HRM-Pro, Tri or Swim chest heart rate sensor can be used with nearly all present-day Garmin watches, from which the data is downloaded after a swim.

  • It is recorded in degrees

But shown on the watch to a decimal place. And to be honest a decimal point here or there is not really important. When the water is cold or warm you know it. The temperature on the watch just confirms it.

  • I have seen quite a few posts by people who were disappointed that temperature is not recorded in more precision in FIT files, so for some it is probably useful to know before they buy.

Tens of degrees are useful for swim tracks colored by temperature, graphs of the average water temp. over time, etc.
