Does the HRM Dual have issues with irregular heartbeats like PAC & PVC?

I'm 70 years old and used Garmin HRMs for decades.  Had AFIB starting in my 40s through my 60s and never lost HR data when the AFIB would kick in.  I would see HR jump from the 140s to the 220s.  For other reasons I've been off the bike for a few years but now have about 30 days on it.  I had an ablation nearly 2 years ago and so far no AFIB events.  OTOH, I occasionally have Premature Ventricular and Premature Atrial contractions (PVC/PAC).  I can usually feel a slight flutter when I am in PVC/PAC.  This is usually transient and no impact on my rides.  The cardiologist doesn't see these as being too dangerous.

So...since I've gotten back on the bike I normally get good connectivity with the HRM Dual and Edge 840.  I do all the tricks of wetting the electrodes and later getting warm enough to have sweat under the strap.   I'm going easy in Zone 2 for now and things going well then I lose the HR data.  Doing all the normal tricks (making sure the electrodes are wet, checking position...) I might get HR data for a few seconds but once I got going it would stop. I usually had to complete my ride without HR data.  BTW...my apple watch would give me HR data.

I did try the reset procedure tonight and so haven't had a chance to see if that did anything.  If not...

Any suggestions for other HRM straps to try as an alternative?  Any other thoughts?

  • Hi

I have no problems with the HRM Dual, although I have PVC. I only run, but I guess the bike should be fine too. It looks like something is wrong with the strap, isn't it old?

  • Sadly nope.  I actually replaced my "old" one a month ago and at the same time upgraded my bike computer to the Edge 840.  The problem continued.   SIGH.  BTW...no difference between the old and new strap.

  • Maybe you have both the ANT+ and BLE variants of the HRM-Dual sensor defined on your Edge? In that case, set tbe BLE one to Off. ANT+ is generally easier in a technical sense, it just broadcasts, less things that can go wrong in the communication.

Is the battery in the Dual OK?

Can you check with a phone app and the BLE connection of the HRM-Dual, look what it is sending while you are sitting down, and when walking around. HRM sensors don't often break, unless you drop them on a hard surface, but sometimes components can just fail.
