Dead HRM Pro and Garmin support

I changed the battery on my HRM Pro just after warrantee ended, and it never turned on again. Tried Varta, Energizer, tried resetting the strap by putting the battery upside down... I tested the batteries with a multimeter, both were 3.1V. The strap just never turned on again even though it worked fine for 2 years.

I contacted Garmin support, and they had the audacity to propose to me to return my dead strap and order an HRM Pro Plus full price in replacement. I get that the warrantee ended, I'm might not entitled to a full price replacement, but this problem is documented everywhere, people have problems left and right after changing batteries on these straps. They took 2 weeks to answer my support ticket, never apologised and proposed to me a new strap full price. No acknowledgement of the issue, no solution provided, no discount on a new strap, nothing.

So just a heads up for other people owning or planning to buy these straps, be aware it might just be disposable e-waste that could die simply after changing batteries. And Garmin does not seem to care. Pretty sad.

  • And of course it was nothing you did when changing the battery that caused the failure? Garmin have every right to be sceptical. Changing the battery is not straight forward and requires care but while there might be a few people who post here with problems I’d be pretty certain there are many more who don’t have issues.
